View Full Version : Manufacturers Compendium

It would seem that each and every year there are more and more manufacturers of LV lighting products. I thought it would be interesting if we started a list.... Pro Grade only please!

No commentary required, simply a list of LV lighting manufacturers. If you notice one missing as the list develops then feel free to add it to the list. It would be great to have this alphabetically sorted, so when you add another name to the list below, quote this message and then add the new name in a color font.
Who knows, we might all discover something new here.

Paul, add them to Billy's list to keep the list growing. The next person will add to your list, etc..

I tried to quote his list and it wouldn't come up. I'm probably messing up somewhere.

Oh crap! That's because he quoted James and then edited. If you quote Billy's post now, you'll only get what's outside of James' quote. Dang, how can we keep the list growing while keeping it all together?

How do you differentiate between a manufacturer and a distributor?
Some that are listed are OEM "manufacturers" meaning they have no manufacturing facilities and have another party manufacture for them (usually overseas , Mexico or south America) for private label. Some of these so called manufacturers share some of the exact same fixtures to the T . I would call them distributors.

Doesn't really say if they make them or distribute them, but I just asssumed.

I wasn't necessarily referring to Oase as they primarily serve the water market . I meant some of the names on the list which are questionable as to whether they should fall within the "lighting manufacturer" heading.

This is quite a list! Great work so far guys... feel free to add more as you discover them.

There is no doubt that a few of the names on that list are not exactly manufacturers, more like re-packagers and marketers, but that is ok as we know who they are.

It should be fun to go down the list and google those names that you have no experience with.... might just find some hidden gems.

Happy New Year.

I had never heard of Night Orbs before. Pricey little bobbers...

I think that might be what is installed in the reflecting ponds in front of a local community theater.

BTW, I think the overall lighting portrait leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree Gregg, it does leave room for improvement. Maybe you should talk to them or show them what it could look like.

Just fixing a typo...

Venturewest

My local irrigation distributor just started carrying a new line called Alliance Outdoor lighting. Solid brass, lifetime warranty, 25' lead, 35 lamp. A lot like Unique and others. Has anyone heard of them?

I am mostly curious. They are out of California, and I am not sure where they are made but I have a good guess.

Here is the website. http://http://www.allianceoutdoorlighting.com/index.html (http://www.allianceoutdoorlighting.com/index.html)

I wondered if they were at Lightfest. The prices are ridiculously reasonable for a lifetime warranty. Obviously backing it up long term is another thing.

Guess we need to add them to the list.

Guess we need to add them to the list.

Uh Oh, Here we go again.

Unique is already on the list. Alliance is just a knock off. Joey will explain, I'm sure. Maybe you should just do a search on this forum about "Alliance Lighting?" You should get all the info you need.

JoeyD

I really dont want to go intot his again so I will make this post and this post only.

Just be aware Venture, sometimes price isnt all its cracked up to be. They compete against Advantage, Encore, Lightcraft, BQL, Malibu, Etc............Just know you can get just about everything they have from us in our Brass Knights line at a very competitve price and you still get the reliable Unique Lighting name behind it.

I think the word you are looking for is "passionate" or "dedicated" to the profession of Landscape and Architectural illumination.

How many manu's are offering LED fixtures that are simply their existing housing with an LED bulb installed off the shelf? The people building whole fixtures with a built in LED, even the ones that are removable/upgradeable will fall to the wayside once retro bulbs become more widely available at a competitive rate. Of course I mean bulbs that work.

Sort of amazing when you think of it... To think this all started with some juice cans, pie plates, and 12Vdc auto batteries in a garden in the early 1950's.

The other cool thing (If I do say so myself) is that we have this compendium as a resource. As far as I know it is very much complete. If anyone knows of a manufacturer of LV Outdoor Lighting products that is not on the list, by all means add it.

Not sure who you are responding that Manahawkin has good money. Local area is getting bigger, and LBI is very popular right now. It is very difficult to market in a shore community. It requires great customer service and ongoing sales efforts. What is your name and where are you from?

Gerry - our website and media are all personally driven articles. No permission required as they are open links to the companies websites. Some of which came to us and many of which we contributed our time for that purpose, to create the public image and persona that reflects the "Reynolds" name. I always tell a client that is comparing us to another company that all they have to do is look at our resume (website and links) to see that what you get when you choose our system.

Thanks for the compliments.

Hey Tim, It wouldnt surprise me one bit if HD does a deal with a manu like FX. HD has long been after "mid line" of LV lighting fixtures. They just recently dropped malibu (more like Intermatic dropped the line) and intermatic and the Snoc line does not sell very well.

Bill Locklin (Bless his soul) used to tell a wonderful story about the time when a big box chain (not sure if it was HD or not) was after him to sell Nightscaping on a retail basis.

Given the market conditions in your Country, I can see how Hunter might be tempted to do a volume deal with a big box. They just took on a chunk of new meat to chew when they acquired FX and probably need the sales no matter what.

One good thing that might come of it, if it is true, is that FX would finally have to list their products for use here in Canada :canadaflag: I cannot see HD taking on a line that could not be sold North American wide.

Regards

P.S. Brings up another relationship; Unique and Seagull. How is unique managing that relationship now that Seagull has filed for Chapter 11 Protection?

My goodness, looks like someone went on a shopping trip to China! Now where have I seen every single one of those fixtures before? hmmmmm? oh ya, at any of about a dozen different "Manufacturer's" websites!

:dizzy:

Alan B

Top Lights is a spin off (former employee) of SPJ. The reality is SPJ was the originator. Nate and Unique got their fixtures from SPJ when they first started, then after building traction, Unique went on their own. Rockscapes also came out of SPJ, and after the owner sold Rockscapes, he has then started and incubated several other smaller manu's. Cast came out of Unique. Cast founder was one of Uniques largest distributors who then went on his own. If you want to play fair, you could say SPJ was the first and major originator of what you call the ubiquitous fixtures--and Unique and Cast came out of them. The reason most don't realize this is because they companies that use distribution channels have 1000's of sales people and dealers telling them that the dealer supplied products are the real products and everything else is garbage.

I will acknowledge that 95% off the ubiquitous fixtures are not comparable to Cast or Unique in quality, components, finishing, reliability, innovation, support. Additionally Cast and Unique are "real" companies that support the industry, quality and innovation which in my eyes makes them very important and valuable.

Obviously, I am touting my own horn, but that is because I believe there is a great comparative advantage of using a factory direct manu IF you can find one that has a quality product and is a stand-up company (which includes having inventory, support, innovation, quality). It will bring more power to the contractor and eliminate inefficiencies that hurt that contractor.

Just as some take an LED light made in china with the same casting and heat sink and then install their own components. Its all standard business. For the record, I have nothing to do with any of the companies I mentioned, I'm not defending them, just stating it how it is.

Respectfully,

Alan

Alan B

I also want to add, that I believe what James is doing--taking a product and trying to improve it is exactly what we all need and not a put down. It's called innovation, free market, progress. Competition is what makes things better, more efficient and help everyone and should be embraced not feared, especially when manufacturer competition is what will help the contractor. In the end the better product, business model and company will rise to the top.

James, I have several LED's that I have from long ago and they have the exact same casting that your products have, down to to the die stamped symbols on the top cover plate. However the internal components are different and they perform differently. It's hard to distinguish unless each product is actually bought and tested. In the end, I think we all agree it is preferable to create your own mold designs to help the buyer dishtinguish and also in the spirit of uniqueness. However when first starting it often makes sense to use and existing and just improve the components, functionality and quality. The when you build traction invest in the new casting.

Alan B

Let me finish my posting spree.

Regarding FX. I don't know if they will be in HD. But if they do, it will likely be analogous to how the irrigation products are distributed in HD. The mainline manu's that sell through contractor distribution sell one grade to contractors (high quality) and create a lower end line of irrigation that they sell through HD (lower quality plastic). I would think IF fx sell in HD, it certainly would not be the same products that FX currently sells through distribution. It would be a lower end line (probably much better than the disposable Malibu styles fixtures, but much lower than their real contractor line).

Alan

The rumor about FX may have originated with a post I made in the irrigation forum...

HD will be selling Hunter products, Hunter owns FX, so I asked whether it might mean we would soon see FX there too...

Somehow, I don't think so.

Alan. There are good reasons that we use the heat sink, collimators (lenses), base, and LED chips that we do. Each component used in the lamp is the best on the market for that task. The heat sink has over 300% more surface area than the popular cast aluminum versions. The collimators are name brand and the best optical quality in the market. The LED chips are Cree XR-E, top performers and leading the industry. The super unique quality in the lamp is the proprietary driver. This is unlike any other driver I have seen in the market. It truly is the engine of the lamp. I could not see any value in spending money trying to re-create or improve upon already excellent components.

There are many industries that use quality generic components in their products, it is not an uncommon manufacturing methodology. Electronics, Appliances, Autos, etc etc. It only makes sense to do so.

You should add Solas Ray to this list. They are also an AOLP manufacturer member. I was at their factory last week. They have some pretty neat stuff they are developing. A lot of it is of more of a commercial nature, but good LED stuff nontheless.

Tim, does Solas Ray produce landscape lighting / low voltage outdoor lighting products? This list is pretty much focused solely in the traditional landscape lighting category.
