skidsteer is a 1990 with 2200 hours. We do everything with it. I have pallet forks york rake attachment and I fabricated a spade for digging and installing trees. We dont run it every day so I cant justify spending money on a new one

LOL...I'm sorry, but I just can't help but get a grin. Whenever I see an outfit like this (and like Krefts), it just makes it all worthwhile. I can really appreciate people that have the same mindset as I, with the philosophy that well taken care of equipment actually helps bring in business.
I get alot of teasing and ribbing from friends of mine about my rig being so sparkling clean al the time, but it has got to be more of a principle thing than anything now. It's not so much the cleanliness that gets noticed now, it is the reputation for HAVING such clean equipment consistently.

haha, Yea When I started I only had that truck so I had a welder make me an aluminum insert and tailgate to protect the bed of the truck until I could buy a dump truck. I got a used '88 chevy 1 ton dump this fall. You can't miss me now I'm the only company that has a truck with three shades of white on it.

sprnggrn
01-07-2008, 10:31 PM
I have three employees. Only one crew. I grew up in a company with anywhere from 10 to 20 guys. It burnt my father my brother and myself out. I promised myself if I started a buisness I would keep it small and high end. More money less agrivation.

I've worked for a few companies in the past and my most recent company I worked for was forever green, out of Foster,RI. We did all the paver work and Rock Doc did all the stone work for Paul st.amand, Coventry. My old foreman taught me everything I know. He had really good patience and was a great teacher.

01-08-2008, 06:38 PM
Start to finish it took 3 years. The reason why is the job had no plan. We made it up as we went .The client was very good about it. But there were electritions, excavators, plumbers, carpenters, you name it. The best part was a bottomless amount of money to work with. We did all of the landscaping trench walls, land clearing, water feature, walls, patios walkways, plantings, and some of the track 2500' feet total.

Wow I can't believe that their is another giant backyard with train tracks in it. About 7 years I used to be a meter reader. On one of my routes the house had kind of the same set up. I'm 99% sure it was one of the Tasca's. It was definitely in the northwestern part of the state. Must be a rich guy thing. Hopefully someday I will have a track in my backyard.....a motocross track. Looks like a nice well established set up you have there. Glad to see other people from R.I. on here.

My season has be going good so far, we actually started doing work for the landscape designer my old boss worked for. Seem as though my old boss's personal problems were getting to be too much to deal with. Although I am downsizing my hydro seeding side of the business though, I'm selling my hydro seeder, nurse tank and all my hoses and equipment, If you guys are interested let me know. I'm going to try to use the money to get a dump trailer for my hardscapes work. Seems as though I get more work on that end of things. Anyways good luck.

sprnggrn: So far I put in a new steering stabilizer, new sway bar and bushing that attach to the frame, new power steering pump and junk yard steering box to try to fix the problem. The truck is at Coventry wheel and brake. Leo over there had it for about a day and said that it needed over 1,500 in front end work. Including all new seals for the drive axel, new universal joints near the driverside and passenger side knuckles and the list goes on. I was looking at hurd for a new dump truck but to replace the one I have now Its like 34,000 with out a plow. With the economy the way it is and me relying on construction work mostly for money I think I'm leaning towards putting the money into the 87. Whats your opinion, you think those trucks are worth the investment.

Yea, I like the idea of not having to worry about the paint finish If I backing into someone driveway with alot of over growth. Also all winter long the people I plowed with keep running into problems with their trucks and mine ran care free all winter long, I think the only problem I had was the battery tray rotting out of the inside fender. I think its just paying me back for having soo little problems all winter long, ha.

I thought I would revive this thread, with an update on my truck. I had a lot of work done on the front end and it solved the problem I had, however the other afternoon I broke two brake lines and rolled down a drive into on coming traffic. No one was hurt but I fixed the rig and sold it. I hit my threshold on money I wanted to put into it. So heres that newest addition. 07 2500hd, with insert.

tcalb2
10-05-2008, 12:19 PM
Thanks, yea I would have liked to keep it around, especially after all the money I put into it. Just don't have any place to store it in the mean time. Plus I sold it to Hattoy's so I'm sure they'll get some good use out of it. My year has been pretty good, I'm actually thinking of getting out of maintenance and just doing construction, however with the economy the way it is I'm fearful of the amount of construction work out their next season. I have two walkway projects lined up for the spring but the way things are looking with RI's economy I don't know that people are spending the money they were spending a few years ago. I look at some of the supply stores and see them low staffed and not bringing more product in, its alittle scary. I know you guys operate with a lot of maintenace accounts. Do you guys feel the crunch at all or do you stay pretty steady?
sprnggrn
10-06-2008, 06:09 PM
We only have 26 mowing accounts, all full service. Most of our construction comes from upgrades on existing accounts, and the rest comes from referrals from them. Over the years we gained great clients and backed away from bad ones.
tcalb2
10-06-2008, 08:04 PM
Yea, I think the problem I run into is that 2/3 of my mowing accounts are just that, just mowing. And I'm not getting the additional clean ups, mulching etc. Actually the two on Cowesett Green are like that. So Its kind of not making me much at the end of the season. But eventually I'd like to get to the point like you said "full service" maintenace accounts. So maybe I won't be making much on the mowing but your getting the steady flow of other maintenance work. I don't know, Its a learning curve for me ha. Maintenance just doesn't come easy to me.

good point. I haven't really ventured into the designing of plantings and what not. Most of the time I just design and install the hardscape feature.. I defently don't get much exposure to that aspect of landscaping. I've been learning as much as I can from the people I've worked with but, theres alot to that side of landscaping that I just don't have the knowledge in. Someday maybe.

I hope this bill they just past will ease people's minds and help them start spending. I'm looking at a pretty dry season for construction so far. I'm going to try to drum up some business by selling some maintenance on the hardscapes I've installed.

Thank you all for the compliments. Maintenance is the word for this year, any large installs or hardscaping will be a gift. Tcalb are you mounting it to a plow frame or some where else. Lawn crafters, how are you . Did the 36" treat you well

I putting a front mount hitch receiver, since I don't have a plow on this truck. I'm going to make a basket for the vac to bolt down into. I've seen this done on this site a few times. I don't know how RI DOT views this. So I might have to take a shoot off when driving. This is the only way I can cut down on how many trucks I take to do a clean up.
I hear ya about the maintenance, I have to admit your right about that all the way around. I'm going to try to pick up some more this season.

There are a few guys around here that mount them like that. I would be weary of that chute getting clogged. Can you mount it on the trailer. And buy the way, no Halprin

I only use mine in the fall and when I do I take two trucks. My small one ton has a swing away mount.

Yea, I ended up doing the samething last year. It's nice to be able to maneuver the vac right to the pile instead of dragging the pile to the truck. we'll see how it turns out I just ordered the welder last night. the vac will probably fall off the front of the truck as I'm going down the road and rip off my oil pan

Do you use the vac alot in the spring?

On a few of the larger properties, yes. I also get a hand full of people who call who I don't normally service that want just a clean up.

last year It was a pain because I had construction jobs to do and the vac box was in the way, this year I'm going to ride it out and get whatever clean ups I can. Unless I get a few of the bids I sent out for hydro seeding.

The way construction is people are spraying for 9cents a sqaure foot, because their isn't enough work available. Most of the jobs I see now are construction clean ups and septic repairs.

Didn't't you sell the seeder? That's a tough racket. I usually sub that out so maybe i can use you on some projects

Yea its funny I know about three other people who do it and as soon as I get a call from a customer and hang up their on the phone with Shane or Ronnie get their price per square foot. Its crazy. yea I was going to get rid of it, but It's already paid for itself and I've been getting steady small jobs from the excavation company I use and the designer. So I just kept it to keep those people happy and coming back.

i doing pretty good i am just getting spring fever. the 36 lesco did great for me i had to spend $10 to have the recoil rebuilt but thats it. i plan to use it this year as my main mower and i have 25 weekly accounts next year but will probly use my lawnboy on a few cuz they are push mow only, so the lesco should make it. next year ill buy a 48inch wright stander and have the lesco 36 become back up. so far i love the mower, sometimes i wish i bought your 48 lesco cuz i have some yards that are pretty big but, o well, i also have yards that i can fit bthe 36inch thought the back yard gate, so i guess it worrked out. but i cant wait for this year i have bought a lot of equipment this winter so i am exited to use it. i also changed the oil, got a new pair of blades, changed the airfilter, changed the oilfilter, and i put the rack'em catcher on(i did the catcher a while ago) so i am good to go.
