I am looking at a '95 Dodge 2500 w/ 5.9 V8, 5 speed, 4.10 gears, 4x4, reg cab, w/ 135,000 mi. It has not been used for towing It has been on ebay and he originally wanted $8000, but I can get it for $6500. I want the power b/c next year I want to get a 7x14 enclosed trailer. Do yall think that is a good price? Down the road, would a Cummins diesel drop work in this truck? I have posted a pic of what I drive and pull now-a-days.

Just going by what you have listed, $6500 doesn't sound too bad.

Although I don't know a whole lot about Dodges or diesels, I'm pretty sure that the diesel will involve more than a simple "drop in" conversion. Unless you're into tinkering, might be further ahead when it's time for another upgrade to sell this one (assuming you buy it) and get a diesel powered truck then.

I've seen clean 1st generation Dodge diesels go for about $9000 - $10000. If you can afford the difference, I'd go for the diesel now. The 5.9 is a good motor, but the fuel mileage isn't that great, and it really doesn't really seem to pull that good. The 5 speed and 4:10 rear end will certainly help though. I had a 1/2 ton with the 5.9. It was a good truck, but the diesel I have now is 10 times better!

The problem w/ those first generation diesels for 9-10k is that they have 200-300k mi on them. I cannot find any dodge diesels around that price w/ less than 200k.

It sounds like a good deal,but if you want a Cummins,buy it now,dont wait,they wont get any cheaper,the money it will save you in fuel will make up the difference in cost,and the resale is much better,not to mention it will pull anything you put behind it.The 5.9 gas engine is a good engine,but I would never buy any Dodge without a Cummins in it,unless it was practically given to me.

That gasser is going to love gas. Even if you could find a used 5.9 ISB to drop in a dodge, all the other little changes would cost a fortune.

Now that Dodge is changing body styles and making the Cummins quieter, more used 1st and 2nd generation trucks may be available for sale.

I've seen several low milage 2nd generation (24 valve) trucks for sale in my local paper.
