hey. i'm 14 and i got an old 1985 briggs & stratton magnetron from my grandpa i'm pulling it apart mostly to learn more about engines but hoping i can get it to run again. i am having trouble getting the crank case open. i have removed the fly wheel but the crank case and cylunder housing is one piece, so in order to get into the crank case either the metal piece that holds the mower blade must come off (my dad thinks that it is permanently attached to the drive shaft) or somehow the canecting rod is takin off from the outside (seems pretty imposable to me)
i would really really apprietiate any help espeatially if someone owns the
1981+ briggs repair manual. thanks alot for any help :clapping:

You will need to remove the blade holder/adapter. Remove the crankcase cover bolts & the pan should slide off. You may have to removed any debris built up on the crankshaft to get the cover off. Also, post the model, type & code for more complete info.

i've looked at a couple simaler engines in the shop at school and your right. I'm sure the blade Holder has to come off. It's just my dad thought it was cast as one piece with the drive shaft and its a cylinder shape with two little holes in it, so theres no real way to get ahold of it. i'll probably jam the cylinder and see what a pipe wrench can do. i guess your supposed to have some special tool to use in the little holes. its also pretty rusted so it will be interesting. anyway thanks for your help:p :gmctruck:

You need a gear puller such as the one below, Screw the blade bolt back into the crankshaft but leave the head sticking up a little. You may have to go to a hardware store and get a longer bolt to get it all the way off.

hmm...... I'm in a pretty sticky situation then because i'm quite sure we don't have one of those. but thank you for the help. so it looks like its just press fit on? so if i want to get it off i just have to pull it straight off? or is it threaded?....... i'll keep playing with it...... thanks for the help.
