1)a dealer is selling a ford f-550, he says the gvw is 13,500 is that right? i thought the gvw on a 550 was 19500, 450 17500,and 350 13500. whats going on???

2) is a 3126b cat the same as a c7? im looking at a f650 that has the 3126b paired to a auto is that a good powertrain? the cat is better for pulling then the cummins right?

truck range depending on many things such as 4x4, wheel base, engine tranny etc. my f550 is a 17.5K GVW. my new f350 is 11K, and my old F350 is 9900 GVW. to the best of my knowledge, that is very low for an F550. all you need to do is open the door, its on the tag.

An f550 should be 17500-19500# gvw. A 350 with 550 badges might be rated at 13500#. I'd check on the door.

the dealer checked the door for me and said it was 13.5k the vin reads it as a f550 so i know its not a f350 someone put f550 badges on. it is a 2002, 4x4, 7.3, 162'' wb, extended cab. i have seen 4x4 crew cabs with a 19.5 gvw so i dont understand why this one is so low??? so this means i can haul 13.5 minus the weight of the truck?? i would guess the truck ways 9,000lbs so i can only haul 4,500lbs legall??

The 550 looks clean but you really need to see it in person. I have several 02s look for the oil pan rust , did the truck plow or salt? When was the trans replaced? Which fuel tank does it have , is it behind the rear axle, if so does the tank have any delamination? If the truck needs all of these things walkk away or buy the best extended warranty you can get and make sure it covers all of these iteams and labor.

I have a feeling this F-550 has had some front end damage or body damage. I don't think the newer style turn signals were on 2002 trucks. The paint looks too new for being the age of the truck.

yeah the f650 has been painted. not because of body damage, they paint all of the trucks they get that custom color. the f550 i think is original

F-550 can range from 17,950 to 19,000 GVW and can range from 26,000 to 33,000 GCVW on the newer ones. The Chevy and Dodge 5500 go up to 19,500 GVW and both only have a 26,000 GCVW on 4X4 models. With a 4X2 Chevy 5500 you can go up to 26,000 GVW if that makes any sense but it still only has a 26,000 GCVW.

so if you say the bottum of the range for a 550 is 17950 then how come this one is 13500?

I dont know. It must be a misprint since even when they were introduced in 99 I dont think they were that low. After looking at his pictures it is a 2002 and it says on their 17,500 GVW.

Maybe the driver's door was replaced with one off of a 350? I think the newer dodges have the info on the door instead of on the jamb like older trucks.

From what I've been able to gather. The F-350's C&C's are usually 11000. The F SUPERDUTY (88-97 models) were 15000 gvw. The 99-03 F450's were the same 15000gvw. The newer 450's have a 16000 gvw. The earlier 550's were a 17500 and the newer ones a 19500. Can't imagine a 550 being a 13500? Have you cross checked the vin # to confirm this info?

dang that looks like a heavy load for that truck!!! is that legal when loaded?
i think you just unveiled the mystery then. i bet that dumb sales man saw the gvw for the rear and thought that was it and never looked for the total.

Nope not legal. Truck weighs 10,000 pounds and the dozer was a little over 8,000. So close it's wasn't funny but by rights not legal if going by gvw. The axles weren't overloaded but Ford put the limit on the total truck. :( I had those timbren helpers in it so it wouldn't sag but actually it handle it pretty nice after I put the chains on the right way. :) I also have since got a 10 ton goosneck trailer that I use now with a 110 gal fuel cell mount on the truck bed. :)

I am thinking the dealer is doing what you said and looking at only the rear axle rating. :hammerhead:
