For thoughs of you smaller operations that use your cell phone as a primary phone. What is your opening question?
Hello?
Yellow?
**** ******** how may I help you?

Actually I hardly ever answer the phone, it goes to voicemail most of the time. In the spring I make more of an effort to answer. I just answer "Hi this is HOOLIE"

I save their numbers in my phone and greet them by name....I think it makes the customer feel special.

I have the same issue. My mowing is a side business and I use my cell phone as my business phone. I have found that if I don't know who is calling I just answer Hello. If it is one of my customers I know because I have them stored in the phone

Yes Sir'.......Many people do not think of the little things, or maybe they take it for granted since they already have their buisness

They call the office , no one has my cell # , if they did I would never get work done, or worse , talk to someone when Im in a trench and forget I told them when I would be there.

I used to run my business from my cell phone. Just about drove me crazy.
Ringing all of the time, I could never get work done due to the interruptions, finally got a remote office/dedicated line and a secretary.
Much better now.
Oh, and how I answer the phone?
"Who the #@$% is this and how did you get this number?":)
Usually it is just "hello this is (insert name)".

I stopped using my cell years ago with my company.
I use a landline now and its answered by me saying my company name.

How about "What the hell do YOU want?!"
j/k, I answer in the full name of my business, always.
That is, I speak out my company's name.

I answer my office line: Depierro Lawns; This is Bill. I only give out my cell # to customers and I answer it: Hello, This is Bill.

Being a veteran I still use the "procedure" for answering the phone as "Big Green Lawn Care, this is Ryan, how can I help you?"
It seems long but compared to how I used to have to answer it as:
"381st Intelligence Squadron, Computer Operations, Senior Airman Tennyson speaking, how can I help you?"
Only downside is, sometimes I rush it and I worry that it would come off as my business being sloppy or something, so I've made a self concious effort to slow myself down for the customer.

I answer it 'A and C Landscaping... Gary speaking' unless it is friend or a very good customer, and only if I am certain it is them. I've made that mistake more than once. :hammerhead:

"Barone Landscaping, this is Vince" (like they expect anyone else to answer my cell phone:laugh:
Personally, I don't like it when people answer, "Hi Vince". I prefer the old standard, "hello" since we are used to responding to that greeting. Even when you do know which one of your customers is calling it sounds nice to them when you sound pleasantly surprised to hear from them..."oh, HI ! how are you?"

I can tel you this much. I have a handful of crazies that call me every spring. I finally added them to my phone last year and labeled it as CRAZY DON'T ANSWER!!! That way when it rings and I see that on the screen, I know not to bother.

Wow, can't remember the last time I found a dime phone:laugh:
I have a land line, that can call forward to my cell, in case I can take calls, and if not, I transfer the cell to a answer service. I think it's much nicer to have a human answer the phone, so I try to avoid machine at all costs. I answer with the business name, and who I am, and I also have call display so I can have an ideal who is calling. :nono: Never ignore the wife's calls!

I also do "Business Name", this is "my name".
I tell my cutomers I perfer e-mail and can respond just as quickly via e-mail. I have a blackberry and most of the time I will instantly shoot them an e-mail back with what they need.

My blackberry is a productivity killer if I leave it on. I usually schedule an hour a day 3-4pm when I take calls, return calls, and answer emails. I put it on my voicemail message that is the time I will call you back. I've probably pissed off a couple of people but its the best way for me to focus and get work done.
