View Full Version : advantages of gas trucks?

We all know that diesel is the way to go, because of their awsome torque and long lasting engines, but other than less money to buy is there any advanteges to having a gas truck?
Also, is there anyone out there who only runs gas trucks in there fleet?
When it comes to new trucks, the lower purchase price up front seems to be the main advantage of gas over diesel.
Same thing holds true for older ones too, but as well for older trucks, the gas engines are a lot simpler for the average person to work on. (I'm thinking tune-up work mostly, not major engine rebuilding)
Not all that long ago, gas engines were common even in many medium-duty trucks (5-ton series) although these days, they are pretty well all diesel. At my work we have 2 boom trucks, one a gasser and one a diesel. It's easy to see why the diesels have "taken over"! :)

In a heavy GVW truck you get more payload capacity with gas.
Major repairs are less expensive with gas engines. No fuel separator to worry about, one battery not two, to replace. Most service garages will fix your gas truck, not so with diesel.
If you must come and go at odd hours in residential areas the quieter gas truck will save your tires from errant screwdrivers
Gasoline is more readily available.
Gas is a more dependable fuel in cold climates; no worry about fuel gelling, easier cold starts, if your battery dies only need one set of jumpers to get you going (wont do that with a diesel sorry).
Quick heat and defrost with gas engine.
I'm sure there are other advantages, these are off the top of my head. Not to say either one is better than the other, each has its moments depending on the application.

On a "small" trucks and cars (1/2 ton or smaller) gas is usually much faster in acceleration but cannot move nearly as heavy load.

When filling truck & equipment, you dont have to use 2 seperate pumps....1 gas & 1 diesel.
