Is there a way to test your soil to get the basics of what is in it without having to send it off? If not where is somewhere I can send it and how much does it cost per sample?

call your local extension agent they will have valuable information on this and probley a lot of your questions. They will have information that is correct for your region.

Around here, the county extension will send them off at no charge for homeowners. I've also used CLC Labs (in Ohio, I believe, but you can google them for sure). They charge around $10 or $15 with a 1-2 week turnaround. I charge that to the customer if they don't want to go to the county extension.

that sounds a lot more practical. I was asking someone else and they sent me to a site where it would have been a few hundred dollars to get tests done. I'm sure that would probably be more detailed but I just want a basic test to tell me what the soil needs. That went in to all the microbs living in the soil and what not.

I use University of Mass for all my soil tests and they charge $12 per sample and it tells you everything you need to know.
