View Full Version : Never assume anything new is good

Had a frustrating time yesterday.

A Toro Workman had a bad ignition switch. I pulled it and bought a replacement generic OFF-ON-START switch for $9.95. Installed it and when I went to start the engine the main fuse blew.

OK, maybe dumb me had some wires crossed, so pulled switch and confirmed all was correct. After replacing fuse I tried again with switch dangling from wires and all worked fine. Hmmmm. So I reinstalled switch and promptly blew another fuse.

Then I got the bright idea to check the switch itself out with an ohmmeter. Sure enough, some internal fault would short out the "battery" terminal to the metal switch housing whenever the key was turned. And if the switch was installed on the dash, bingo, dead short to ground and a blown fuse.

Returned the bad switch for a replacement and everything works as it should.

Moral of my tale is don't automatically assume something you buy new will always be OK. And yeah, the switch was made in China . . .
