DK - remember where you are from. steven is from Louisiana you are from Ohio - your timing on doing flyers may be different than his. You may want to wait for a reply from someone closer to where you live. (I am assuming you are advertising mowing service on your flyers)

Being from Ohio too I wait till the beginning/mid march. Right now with the snow on the ground and more flying people wont be thinking about lawn care services. If you pass it out now 9/10 people are going to prolly just trash it or put it somewhere and forget about it. If you wait till it starts warming up some people will look at it and be more inclined to keep it on the fridge or give you a call. Just my 2 cents.
good luck

Brook, from my experience "the early bird gets the worm". So start early than later with flyers and mail drops and do it many times, regularly. Space repartiton counts. How many times do you see a tv ad before acting on it? Get your name out there. Be seen often!! If had 1000 flyers out there and if 900 replied, can you honestly be of true service to all of them straight away?

It definitly is a decision based on if your going after commercial or residentials. Here(ontario) the commercial tenders are already being filled and most of them started accepting tenders since December. With residentials we watch the weather and as soon as it looks like the snow is going to start melting then we start advertising(usually March), and it could be longer this year with the 2 foot of snow that we got now.

I was thinking about passing them out Last week of Feb and in the middle of march then news paper ads. What do u guys think about this strategy? I would it hurt to wait 2 weeks?

Flyers cost 4 cents each to have delivered around here. $42 bucks a thousand... why would anyone want to deliver their own flyers?

4 cents each is sure cheap allright.. sounds a little too cheap.. at $7 an hour, that's like 166 hung per hour.. or almost 3 a minute.. actually sounds too good to be true.

Last year I did this part time. I passed out 200 doorhanger/flyers and got 4 customers from it, the rest were refferals. So all in all, I got 2% returns(accounts). So Im hoping my 1,500 will do the same and return 30 account.
I plan on making a 2nd batch of doorhanger/flyers that have a box where I will write there estimate in. I will pass these out in the neighborhood that I already have a customer in. That way I can get more people in the area.

They go as inserts in the local paper, then a few days later, in an adbag to the people that don't get the paper. I get teh same price with the community papers to and they go to every house. They even let me skip apartments etc. pick my areas.
Last spring I put out 30,000 for about $2300 and that included printing. They do the printing too.

Sorry, but an insert in the paper is nothing like a note on their door. for SEVERAL reasons... like the inability to target neighborhoods.. not everyone gets the paper.. you ad is diluted by everyone elses, and probably less effective.. especially if you're untilizing your time to set up a mailing list, and doing door to door sales at the same time as hanging door hangers.

I think everything you said here is ridiculous. I CAN isolate neighbourhoods to the Zip code and skip apartment complexes. About $800 gets me 10,000 flyers in peoples hands and YES, 98% are thrown away. That's what happens to flyers. But they bring in work that lasts for weeks for clean ups and years for other jobs. My 30k flyers last year were mostly wasted because I got too much work, 3 of us going at it for clean ups...This year I'm going back to 10k.
I can make $800 in 2-3 days, sometimes in one day during a GOOD spring clean up season. I would rather do that then walk around all day delivering flyers myself. I mean talk about "utilizing your time"
Diluting, lol, You can't avoid that even with addressed admail. I get several letters most days and some days more.
People like flyers, I love them. I look forward to thursday when the flyers come. I have my favorites, Futureshop, Canadian Tire that come every week.
"I'm going to put a sticky on your door and it will be in my own hand writing" lol. I mean all the power to you. If you got nothing better to do then deliver flyers... maybe you should become a Pro Flyer deliverer.
I'm sticking to neighborhoods I'm in all ready and maybe hit some flyer's next week then again 2nd week of march and i'm from Baltimore

You see the thing is, I usually associate people that deliver there own flyers to absolute beginners. People that are really watching their start up costs or have no money. Which is fine. But personally, for the price you pay, for the amount of exposure, there's no point in doing it yourself.
If you are a door to door salesman... ok but I'm not.

I guess the only thing left to say here, is to each their own..
I don't mow, and I've found 1st hand that if I don't stand-out and target (precisely) my advertising, it is totally wasted. on the otherhand when I do door hangers, I get an immediate 3-5% response, and then I get a similar response out of my priced block leading (always mailed with referrals) that's upto a 10% response before adding door to door sales.
I can see how mowing, and clean up services would be better suited for the news paper.. especially if you're pretty affordable..
For me, with chemical lawn care, which is higher in price than anyone around, I get tire kickers from those kinds of methods, and no sales.
so.. to each their own.. I'm glad it works for you bro.

I don't need that many more customers to worry about paying some idiot to pass out flyer's I stick to my street my customers neighbors and if someone happens to be home I can pitch the service myself

i am going to flyer at the beginning of march. then about a month later i will flyer again. my question is do you use the same flyer so they recognize it or a different flyer so maybe the other one will grab there attention? or am i just over analyzing this

We send the post cards three times to the same address. First one you know is going in the trash, second trash, hopfully third will hook when the grass is ready to be cut the see it again and think "hey I've seen this before I just don't know where?"

DK-from Canton area here....earlier the better' but i agree, when folks start seeing their lawn and landscape is when they're most likely to focus on it....IMO Feb,and march all month, not at any given time, but just when the weather is cooperating and people are feeling kinda springy...............dont worry about these ne ohio storms, they come and go

Id try 1500. If u get more, u can always cancel them. Or better yet, sell them off in your area.
