View Full Version : What are you running?

11-05-2001, 02:37 AM
Well, I'm up past midnight, bored, and can't sleep.

I wanted to know what all power equipment, trucks, trailers, how many accounts, how many crews/employees, and how many hours you work a week mowing.

I also want to know what you plan on buying in the next six months:

I'll start us off.

Yard Machines 42" 16.5 HP lawn tractor
Toro Personal Pace 6.0 HP 21"
Ghetto Crapsman trimmer
Ghetto Crapsman hand-held blower.
1994 Ford Ranger, extended cab, 4.0L V-6

I plan on purchasing the following within the next 6 months:

Trailer, 5x10 or larger
Echo PB 650
Echo trimmer (undecided on model)
Toro 44" 15 HP Kohler w/b w/ Toro sulky
Honda 21" Masters (undecided on model)

I am solo, have 7 accounts, and spend about 5-6 hours a week mowing.

Do you do the accounts weekly?

If so it seems like 6 hrs to do 7 lawns is not bad time for solo, even if they are small.

With all your spare time I would suggest some intesive marketing, Flyers and a yellow page ad if you can afford it.

Let the customers come in until you are working about 30 hours per week, then buy more equipment.

If you have good credit, you can go into an equipment dealer and get financed for new stuff as you need it. You may want to go ahead and get the new mower and keep the Yard Man for a spare. Being reliable is essential, you cannot give excuses like broken mower very often until a customer leaves.

Keep running the junk blowers, etc. They are cheaper and if they croak you can replace them with good stuff.

Run the Ford ranger into the ground. The 4.0 engine has plenty of power for a single-axle trailer. JUST MAKE SURE IT HAS ELECTRIC BRAKES!!! You will **** a brick if you have to stop fast on a wet road, even a single axle trailer will boss that Ranger around.

A long , long time ago in an olde land called Hall of Forums there was a feature that was begun, it was called something like
Who, Where and what you started with.
It was getting pretty long and it was an informative section but it was cancelled as the forum got bigger. I hear they are trying to get it going again,

If you are up late and want to read about everyones stuff, this will be the place.

So just to help you now

2000 Walker 26EFI 42" GHS
1998 Toro 15HP Hydro 44" w/ Proslide
1996 LB 21" mower
Husky 140b backpack
Shindiawa Eb630 backpack
2 crap Homelite ST's that I cant blow up
14' trailer w/front and rear gates
98 Chev Silverado Z-71 350

6 years in bus.
20 to 30 accounts
part time
1 crew of 2 (as of Sept 01)
mowing ave. 12 hrs per week
expanding next spring.

It looks like you are heading in the right direction for replacing equipment and I will give you a little unsolicited advice;
go bigger with the trailer, consider a Z, consider not spending a ton on a trim mower unless you really have alot of trim mowing to do.
It all depends on what you want to do with your business. If you want to stay right where you are and not expand, then you are in decent shape. If you plan on getting even a little busier then you have to upgrade.

The best tool of all is Knowledge and this is where you get it. Keep clicking on the banners to help Chuck pay for the site.
Good Luck.

Are you running the 3' by 1.5' flyer? How are the wheel axles holding up? Try a garage sale Toro instead of the Murray. The red & red looks real snappy.

01-21-2002, 11:36 AM
Jack D.
Thanks for the advice. Toro red would look good. Also on the wagon(trailer) have had to beef up the axles to handle the load. Hope to get another wagon this year to pull grass clippings in.
Want to mount a blade on front of bike to push snow with next year. Will keep u updated thanks.!!
