Composting, how do you do it?

I am considering trying to start my own composting. It will be a large amount and on some land so the smell should not be an issue. The things I need to know are what all ingredients are needed? how often does it need to be turned? can it be done out in the open or does it need to be in a shed/ cover to protect it from the weather? Will it just sitting there be enough or do I need to pump oxygen into it? Where can I get the materials I need? Is raw manure such as horse manure a good source to use? How long does it usually take for a pile to be completely composted? I would like for it to be used as a top dress so is there anything I can do to keep it small enough to not have to screen it later? I would like this to be as least costly and organic as possible.

i appreciate it... so I take it that it probably will need to be rotated about daily if not every other day? What do you think is better, worm composting or heat? what is the special factors in worm? does it have to be turned as much?

I think the method you choose will depend on the scale of your operation. Read through the sources of information and different methods, then determine which method is most appropriate for the space & equipment you have available and what you ultimately want to accomplish with your compost.
