Great post to start! We all need some stuff to wish for or this job wouldn't be as much fun! LOL. Toys, toys... Anyway, I bought one thing this year. Toro Groundsmaster 118 for $1,000. Great deal on a mower that has performed very well except for the belts and tire and other things I had to replace. Other than that, it's been great. My Christmas list includes the following:
-Exmark Turf Tracer HP 48" with ECS
-Stihl FS 85 RT trimmer
-Trailer or truck bed with beavertail for hauling stuff around
-Paint job for my truck
-And for extreme measures, an Exmark Lazer Z XP 60" with 27 HP Dihatsu. It's fun to wish! Have fun with this thread guys!

Hey, it's Jim, publisher at TURF. As I've said I am not a LCO ... but I do have over 2 acres of weeds around the farm that -- if I mow weekly -- look just like a lawn (from a distance). Here in northern Vermont, the grass only grows for a few months ... but when it grows, it GROWS! Less than one mow a week and I'm cutting dandylions with my chainsaw.
So I followed lawnsite winter and spring and armed with your wisdom, I purchased a "crapsman" riding mower.
Next year? I'm gonna buy a lawn mower.

11-06-2001, 03:22 PM
So I followed lawnsite winter and spring and armed with your wisdom, I purchased a "crapsman" riding mower.
I am a little confused. If you follow us on a regular basis why did you buy a "crapsman" riding tractor? Surely you must know that the only thing the vast majority of members here would do with a "crapsman" riding tractor is sell it for scrap or hope the junk man doesn't charge us to get rid of it.

This year we bought a 1973 970 Case and a 21 ft. Farm King mower. Best thing we ever bought. Next year looking for a newer truck (got to replace the old '84 GMC Sierra. It's seen better days.) Also looking for a new ZTR (currently have a 1991 John Deere F911 with a 60" deck. Also seen better days about 2 years ago. Way past life expectancy, with it having almost 4000 hours.) Also overhauling 1965 630 Case with a 7' Farm King behind it. New engine rebuild, and new paint. Got to look good for the customers.

Sounds like business is booming.
11-07-2001, 10:41 PM
Looks like everyone has BIG dreams for next season.
11-07-2001, 11:24 PM
We are located in S. Maine and our 100% groth is a low number due to we didnt even include hydroseeding, or our retail mulch facilty along with misc services like irrigation. Our maintenance services should be approx 100% groth and we have 32 lawn set up a 5cents sqft at 22,000 sqft per property so that alone should bring in around $35,000 which 80% is profit. So no dreams here only trying to find reliable help.
( Homer we have openings and a company vehicle plus use of a 2,800sqft lake side condo in winter months for employees while plowing.) So come on up Homer we will put ya anywhere ya want.
Jim at TURF again ...
Yes I did ignore you guys and got the crapsman ... Reason? I didn't figure I needed an expensive mower just for one weekly mowing of 2 acres. (cheap, cheap, cheap). So now you suggest I buy a Murry push mower? That's what I replaced with the crapsman (just kiddin).
11-08-2001, 02:12 PM
This fall I sold my half of the biz to my partner and Cin and I just put a down payment on a house. Its nothing fancy but its something to call home in the older neighborhood on the quiet side of town.
She doesnt want me to contract the mowing out our friend who does our duplex so this weekend I have to buy a YardMan 21" for the lawn and a Cub for the drive.
Heres the cub I have in mind:

By the way, what is snow and what would you plant in it after you plowed it?
The lake house sounds cozy as heck. I could stay there while ya'll were plantin' huh?
11-09-2001, 12:30 AM
Us southn boys don't know what snow is. We remember someone telling us about snow cream once.
11-09-2001, 01:51 AM
I guess I can add my new Redmax EB7000 to my this year list. If it gets the hours my Stihl BR400 has with no trouble, I should be in good shape.
11-09-2001, 10:21 AM
I guess I've upgraded about everything this year.
1994 Toro 580-D w/5000 hrs
1994 Toro 325-D 4WD w/1500hrs
New Stihl FS85 w/angle head hedge trimmer & pole pruner attachments
New Stihl BR400 backpack blower (love the light weight)
New Stihl 029 chainsaw
New Millcreek 60" core aerator (which I mounted to the front of the Toro 325-D with four wheel drive)
30 Gig Western Digital hard drive
Windows 2000 professional
It cost me $10k for the 580, $7k for the 325-D 4wd, so all in all I've spent about the equivalent of a pick up truck. But that's OK, I've billed enough additional this year I'd have to say they've already paid for themselves. The 580 leaks like a sive though. It's in the shop right now for a rebuild of the pumps and one wheel motor. The estimate is for $5k. I'm OK with that, because when they're done it will be a first class machine.
I credit my success in no small part to Lawnsite. The information and advice I've gathered from here gave me the confidence to improve my business. I thank you all.
Our Son Doug who is 24, will be helping me next year. So when all those accounts go to a 5 day rotation in the spring I'll be able to keep up. I've been solo this summer.
If next year's as good as I anticipate, I may get an Isuzu NPR or a compact utility tractor or a pull behind top dresser.
Gawd...look at me, it never really stops for a true equipment junkie like me does it?
I'm what my son-in-law called me "equipment poor"
11-09-2001, 11:33 AM

2001: Big new house with a 2 car garage, we are closing on Dec 14th -anyone want to help me move? LOL. We love our current house but with more chillens on the way we have to get a bigger home.
Faster Computer which will likely be outdated in 2 years
Incorporated my business to an S-corp.
Quickbooks Pro so my wife could simplify the invoicing and do employee payroll. (I only have one part time employee)
Murray 21"-no I'm not kidding; it is not that bad and since I trashed my $400 Lawnboy in 2 years I figured I'll trash a $150 mower this time. Plus it doesn't have that moronic offset wheel and a much easier bagger than the LB.
Kawasaki 25cc or 26cc Trimmer
Stihl handheld vac for leaves along parking lot curblines.
Built a small 8x8 shed to handle some of the overflow from my 10x30 storage unit-then my wife told me I couldn't put any of my big smelly equipment in there because she was going to put my daughters toys in there. And now we are moving and not taking the shed. You win some you lose some.
Next year: shed for the new house, and anything that I wear out I will replace. I hope my expensive stuff doesn't need replacing!
I also hope that I will continue in 2002 to purchase cheap gas! Saw it for 93 cents per gallon at an Exxon yesterday!!! Yee haw!!!

The last time I bought gas that cheap was in HS (88) for my 66 stang. I was filling it up with regular cause I didnt want to pay the outrageous price of a buck 5 for unleaded -LOL!!!
Amazing how things and times sure do change

Didn't buy quite as much this year as previous, but did improve a few areas:
1) Stihl BR420 Backpack Blower.
2) Stihl FS85 Trimmer (to complement my older one).
3) (2) Shindawa Backpack Sprayers.
4) Dedicated Rotary Blade Grinder.
5) New Hauling Package for my pickup.
Previous year I upgraded in many, many expensive areas: New computer, 36" Exmark TTH, 21" Toro Recycler, Stihl Stick Edger, 6.5x12' Trailer, yadda yadda yadda.
Next year I'd like to get an aerator, dethatcher, and overseeder and expand into those areas of the business. It's been a tough market to crack into around here as I can't find anyone who wants those services yet.
I'd also like to tear down and rebuild my garage/shop but that might wait until another year... ;)

Jim at TURF Magazine here. You're right. I should not be slamming folks ... I was just kidding ... but you are right.
As far as this thread being great exposure for lawnsite ... I will be running this as a column in the January issue (minus my wise cracks) ... and before that ... I'll be faxing a copy to a long list of fine companies who advertise in TURF and who should be sponsoring lawnsite. Hope this will help.
