My tachometer quit 2 years ago.

I have an attached stopwatch (digital kitchen timer). I drive in top gear; wide open throttle for one minute. Then measure the feet covered with my measuring wheel. Get about 350 feet per minute. Convert to miles per hour by dividing by 88. This gives me about 3.9 miles per hour.

I plan to use a hand held GPS unit to check it this year. Actually I suppose the speed would be slower on the grass than pavement. Slower with a full load, perhaps. Adjust ounces per gallon to match the sq feet you cover with one tank.

The PG does have a tac...but I am still going to add the Garmin to my PG and Turfco unit this year.

For only $89.00 you can read your speed, and also use the unit to measure lawns.

I think it might even have more functions...but not sure.

Will let you know when I get them!
Can't wait to see how they work!

Forgive my GPS ignorance but how do you use them to measure a lawn? How long does it take?

Micro-Trak's Cal-N-Acre gives electronic speed for $299. We use on self-propelled walk or ZTR sprayers. Simple installation installing 2 magnets and pick-up on rear wheel. Hook up to 12v.

See sprayers at proedgesprayer.com.

You can hold it in your hand...or wear it on your risk and it measures distance.

So instead of using a wheel....you can use this for dual purpose!

Why worry about magnets and "old school" speed.....when you can use GPS speed. It is state of the art for half the price!

We switched our tractor over from radar to GPS.

Actually I also have a digital bicycle speedometer on my hand spreader. You get speed, elapsed time, maximum, odometer, trip meter. Cost is about $18. You have to glue a magnet to the right wheel with silicone.

gps is cool, it tells real time speed and you can keep an eye or set the handles on the zspray to max out at the speed you wan tand forget it. measureing was cool for long properties and you can keep track of total time like a stopwatch with it, very cool . ours came withthe zspray and it is a simple garmin unit

This GPS lightbar systems we tried are $1,500 min. What is cost and supplier of yours? Speed is all we need on this type sprayer.

Thanks,

Thanks Charles. About the 6-function bicycle speedometer on my spreader. I get a speed of about 2.6 miles per hour on grass. Not sure if I slow down on big days. Tall grass or up hill--for shure!

The resettable trip meter can be used to calculate the square footage, provided you have a consistant spread width. I use 9 feet. I find I need to use up 50 pounds of 19-0-6 in about .26 miles. (That is around 1388 feet).

The electronic part can be removed in rainy weather.

Add a cut-off switch in the wire if you want to record the distance only when the fert valve is open.

OK, thats all well and good but really what are you doing with all of this info? I know you cant calibrate a PG that precisely nor a walk behind spreader.

WOW LARRY!! I was just about to get one of the Garmin units myslef until i heard of the Carmen unit! I'm only afraid with the Carmen unit the production time is really going to drop off  not only that but Rodney would need one to detect as far out as 5 miles away since he's out in the middle of those huge fields that strech for miles!
