I am adding an employee or two this year. I just want to make sure I have everything in place to do so. What do I need to get as far as the workmans comp, add thm to insurance?, some kind of payroll....What are the steps to do all this the right way.

Workers comp fill the form out send fifty bucks that gets you started then you report every half and pay the percentage.
New hire you need to fill out the following forms in the state of Ohio for each employee.
employment eligibility verification form follow directions
w-4 from
Ohio job and family form
Need a ein number Employment Identification Number
You mail the Ohio form in they check the individual and take any money from his wage that he may owe the gov, or child support
ss .062 - u match dollar for dollar
medicare .0145 - u match dollar for dollar
st .03 - employee only
Then FICA use the tables or percentages employee only
Also get Circulation e from IRS you will need it
Then you will need to decide how you file 944 or 941
each quarter or year you will fill out forms and write checks to ss, medicare,st job and family I think it is 4 different checks and forms each time if you screw up these forms or payments they fine you big time a good I repeat good accountant can help you here.
Start getting the ball rolling by going to state and IRS websites and order forms because they take their sweet time and you have to mail back and respond on some to get started so it takes time to do it right.
Once you get a system and know your way around the forms it is no problem.
As you can tell I do 90% of my own paper work and tax documents.

The best thing I think you can do is hire an accountant. They are not that expensive for a small operation. I had one a couple of yrs ago when I had employees and I paid her $50 per month. Well worth it and of course it's a write off. On the workers comp thing ,I learned the hard way. When you go in to sign up they give you a form. On the form you can elect to cover just your employees or also cover you. To add yourself is costly ,so check that out before you check it. Also the percentage vary a bunch depending on what line of work you put down. For example landscaping is higher than lawncare. Do some homework before you go in to sign up. It's a pain to change it after the fact. Again though I would look for an accountant.

What's a good way to find refrences for a good small business accountant?
New hire you need to fill out the following forms in the state of Ohio for each employee.
employment eligibility verification form follow directions
w-4 from
Ohio job and family form
Need a ein number Employment Identification Number
You mail the Ohio form in they check the individual and take any money from his wage that he may owe the gov, or child support
ss .062 - u match dollar for dollar

each quarter or year you will fill out forms and write checks to ss, medicare,st job and family I think it is 4 different checks and forms each time if you screw up these forms or payments they fine you big time a good I repeat good accountant can help you here.
So there are 3 forms for new hires and then are there forms to fill out for the taxes you have to take out ss, med, st, fica.
What is circulation e? I did a search and didn't come up with anything.

Every minute that goes by the last week or so makes me want to call an accountant more and more.
I was just looking at my moms paycheck and her ohio tax was only .0034 and there was a city tax of .0189. How come it isn't the 3% in this case?
Also, what about local school tax and unemployment tax? Just want to make sure I have all this right.

Go to ohio busness gateway website call the number to find the state tax. As far as city you only take out city tax if your office is within the city limits unless the employye lives in a city with a higher tax then you have to look in the book to figure out the formula I pretty much already explained evrything else.
Do you use the business gateway thing at tax.ohio.gov?
