Weekes is right - but do some searching with independent agents, your price seems high for GL. I have 500K for under $150/yr. But I am a small operation - if you are a larger op with employees and high gross sales then your price is more understandable.

Wow that seems really high for that little bit of liability. I have 1,000,000 in general liability, and my equiptment insurance wich covers my trailer, mowers, handhelds(weed-eaters, edgers etc...), and my rakes, shovels, etc... for only $912.00 per year. I went with an independent agent in my area. Mine also comes with equiptment rental insurance, medical and a few others.
Brian
We pay about $950 a year for $1,000,000 or about $400 for $350,000

You guys with limits below 1 mil should call your agent and ask him to quote it. Usually increasing limits will not raise rates exponentially. I quoted 500/1 mill limits and then 1 mill/1 mill and the diference was $30/year more.
I've always been told commercial props. require 1 mill minimum, but I could be wrong.

really i might be the cheapest guy on lawnsite
really
but to run around with less then a mil is silly
most commercials want a mil minimum and the cost for 500 was only 35 dollars less....i wanted 2 mil but my gross was too low for the policy to be written
you know how quick you could have a million dollar oops Kick a peice of debris into a roadway and cause an accident or worse a multicar accident...
I sleep better at night being overinsured rather then under

For my full time job I work as an insurance agent in an office in MN. I would not recommend anyone get less than 1 million coverage. It's amazing what people will sue for these days. We pay out 30k on dogbites like they are nothing. Imagine what can happen with the equipment you operate. Not only should you have this on your Business Liability but also on your auto. Many drive 3/4 ton trucks with loaded trailers that together can weigh over 10k. That can cause alot of damage in an accident. You don't want your business going under due to a driving error. Just a little advice to keep you covered. The incresed cost for that on your autos can be as little as five to ten dollars a month so it may be a no brainer.

I just entered a post today asking pretty much the same thing but ask everyone to be specific, as to the company name and how to get in touch and coverage for one million.
I live and work in Alabama and need 1M in coverage now. As you can imagine I really don't want to pay $1800.00 a year while guys here are saying they pay only 3-600.00 dollars.
I hope this will return some specifics.

Bladecutter-
I hired an agent that shops prices from all different companies for me. He has done work for me with regards to auto, home, etc. and also does work for several other companies. So I would just look for a broker somewhere near you and go from there. I understand that each state is different, so what prices you see here are not reflective of your potential costs.
Good luck!

Safeco has an appetite for mowing ops. right now. You have to have previous insurance and have experience in the biz though. This is the case for MO atleast, but probably for the company in general.
If Safeco writes in your state look for one of their agents. There's a good chance they will be independent too, so you will get more than one rate.

Depends on the services you offer too. I know that fert and squirt insurance costs quite a bit more.

Can your agent tell you if his company can write in Alabama.
Or share with me who holds the policy.
Thanks

Allied Insurance is the company my GL policy is written under. To my understanding they are nation wide or nearly so. Hope that helps.

For only $300k, that seems to be high. I'm paying right about $1000 for a mil. with 25k equipment.

Bladecutter,
My carrier is Erie. However, my insurance company shops it out every year for the best pricing available, so it's not always the same. However, it has been for the last two years.
For 1 million policy includes equipment, snow plowing, fertilizing is $3,200 per year and an additional $3,600 for workers comp.
This is almost $7,000 per year insurance. WC is based on payroll. I can't change that.
This is also New Jersey.
Company is myself and 1 employee grossing $150,000 per year.
Does this seem too high?

Hey BMLS, and others, sounds about right. I am told that about 7% of payroll plus premium work comp for landscape is about the norm. I run both liability, auto and comp through Selective Ins.

I am a insurance agent and may be able to help here.
The advice to go with a independent agent is good. Although almost all agents nowadays represent a good handful of companies.
Remember, since you insurance agent is payed a commission based on the total amount of the premium, some agents goals may be to sell you a expensive policy that you may not need. Make sure you have the agent show you different options for different coverage amounts and riders/coverage types. A simple disability extra or something could double your payment. A good agent will simply get you what you need...not try to sell you. Also, READ your policies carefully, in a lot of cases you get what your pay for! Don't fall for the trick of "I can lower your car insurance". In almost all cases, your coverage goes down or is decreased in some way that you may not understand.
Ex.
The limits on your coverage. You will go from like 100k medical and 100k property to 50k/50k.
Also, good auto insurance lets you overlap your limits.
Say you have 30k medical and 30k property, but your total limit is like 50k. So really you could have 29k medical and 29k property and still have to pay 8k!
I don't want to say anything bad about the insurance agents but the reason I am most likely leaving and getting into lawncare/landscaping is because insurance companies really make a killing and there policies are so complex that even a good agent can't explain every moving part without his client getting nervous.
Best luck, if anybody has any further questions

Go with at least a mil, if You are spraying or trimming trees TELL them. You don't want to be told later that you are not covered. Full disclosure is the way to go.

I am new and in my price shopping ways I found a 2 mil gen liability policy with $0.00 deductible for $615 a year with $229.00 down. This seems to good to be true, one catch is if you do commercial you would have to pay $100.00 per customer you add to your insurance - I plan on doing all residential -
Any fine print you guys know of I should look for!!
