I got banned from HEF and my brother is selling his Pete gravel truck with the pup and equipment trailer due to higher over head costs of operating. GRRRRRRRRRRR. :hammerhead: :hammerhead:

Sounds like a full day. I assume your bro has another truck?

bobcat_ron
02-22-2008, 12:07 PM
Nope, no more trucks for him, he's gone through in the last 6 years, 2 Kenworth tractors, both used, 3 lowbeds, first one was used, second and third were new and both bought a year between the two, both with jump jeeps, then a year later the Gravel truck came around. No more trucks, only excavators.

Make it a real PITA when you need to move iron on your time and not someone else's, getting material delivered isn't that big of deal. When we had our 312, we got it moved for us, what a chore that was.

Welcome to the Banned from HEF club

If you don't kiss Steve's azz you get banned :nono:

If I was your brother I would probably keep the gravel truck you will never beable to rely on the New Canadians to provide a reliable service.

The DOT is on a rampage right now you will see 90% of the lowermainlands gravel trucks off the road.

I am relieved to see that I am not the only one on the planet ( my wife tells me not to feel like the Lone Ranger ) who is feeling the winter blues. Living in cold country every spring feels like you are starting a new business. Cabin fever is runnin' high! If I only had a pair of custom made Potato ear rings and a Case hat, I could be happy.......but since that ain't gonna happen.........

Why did you get banned from HEF's?

Get this - There was a post I made regarding K & W's Demolition thread about how much weight the US truckers can carry, so I made a remark in a post that here in Canuckland, you can get away with anything so long as you have enough "axles and a**holes", the latter word being typed as a-asterix, asterix-h-o-l-e, then some one replied a day later, asking me what we use the 'holes for, so I replied "We use the a**holes as drivers".
Next reply I get is from Stevey Wonder, and this is exactly what he typed as this is how the reply came:

"Steve Frazier has just replied to a thread you have subscribed to entitled - K&W Demolition Transportation - in the Moved/Edited Threads forum of Heavy Equipment Forums. This thread is located at:http://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=5704&goto=newpost Here is the message that has just been posted:***************a$$hole is suspended for a week, he's been warned of this before."

So he can type that 'hole word out like that, but when any member does it, they get banned?!?!?!
Also, I never got a first warning or PM from any mods for the first a-holes usage.

If you see the post, get back to me as well as shoot Steve-O a PM if he has the $$ in the a-hole word.

It's actually being sold on Tuesday to a good buddy of his that owns 2 Sterling's, one with a 6 speed Allison and the other new one with the AutoShift, he asked my bro if he was interested in selling it to him since we call him up for his trucks all the time, that and drag racing on the way back to the gravel pits with AutoShifts on the highway makes for great fun too.

They will do all the equipment moves for us, any time of the day and my bro will still be making $15 per move and $5-7 an hour on the trucking, and no over head. And the current driver goes with the truck, we've had him since October '07.

We have a clever nick name for them, the "Mennonite Express".

haha i read the post yesterday...that guy has or had a nice truck but the minute a truck with that low of a bumper comes onto my jobsites he turns around and heads back...then we call the quarry and tell them to never send him again, and i don't care if his bumper folds up. You get nothing but problems out of those hot heads with low bumpers (kinda like 24" spinners on an escalade type people)....you drive a truck that goes off-road, don't b*tch when you scrape it or get stuck and i dent it pulling you out...i digress

I have seen many like that before also and I just laugh when I show them where to dump and they say no because their truck is too nice. I just tell them they could have saved money and bought not such a fancy truck and then they would have gotten paid for that load of stone. I just don't except the load since they can't place it where I want it and tell them to head back to the quarry. The next truck is usually a Mack.

our quarry hires out their trucking like most and the guys run really nice peterbilts, dual chrome everything...and they have high bumpers...you run into problems when you get a guy who owns his own truck and tricks it all out...we had one guy get all bent out of shape because he bent his mudflap holder (this was a crane truck delivering septic tanks)...we told him to stick to delivering man holes and storm water inlets and stay on the blacktop...dont come to our jobs thinking your tires will stay clean..haha

Allot of truck drivers are just crazy but so are some of the owners or excavating companies that want stuff hauled. My dad had a dump truck business. He had an old IH truck that was nothing special. He would get people sending him places that honestly a truck was not made to go. Had one guy (so called friend) that wanted dad to back up on a pile of rock and dump. Dad did not want to do it. Finally the guy convinced him and said I will watch. Well out of that deal dad got a broken spring and many times got stuck. Around here the quarry says it is a curtsy to dump any rock beyond curb side. My honest opinion if your gonna get stuck the truck does not need to be there. That is what track and wheel loaders is for to carry it to the area needed. :)

Ah crappola, now I'm grumpy again, I found out that one of my brother's employees is getting the "1 year itch", he's craving work in Alberta on the really big toys and he plans on leaving mid week of next, good news for me, I get more work on the excavators, but he's a damn fine operator and good with anything that has tracks or wheels and it will really suck losing him those damn Oilers. Now where the hell are my anti-depressants?

No loss for me I don't care that I got banned

As for guys thinking they are going to strike it rich in Alberta good luck it is a big scam. There have been quite a few guys from the area that went to Alberta get out there and the wages are not like the company said. You work long hours for the same wage you make here. There is no places to live, people are renting out clothes closets with a foam mattress on the floor for couple hundred a month. I have talked to people from Alberta that rent their bedrooms for 500 a month. I talked with trademen that have gone back there and they say its not worth it. The carpenters say the black flies the size of birds eat you to death.

bobcat_ron
02-23-2008, 11:23 AM
Our guy is leaving at the end of next week, he'll work for 28 days straight, room and board provided, and get 7-12 days off, which he will use to travel back here. The company name is some thing that has the name of "Graham" in it, I thought at first it was Sureway, but it wasn't.

His resume is impressive, he's worked with every type of excavator out there, even the old Cat 5000 series mass excavators, so he's not just some labourer looking for a quick buck.

Gravel Rat
02-23-2008, 02:36 PM

You live in those camp jobs they will drive you crazy. I know one of my brothers works in one of those camps as a truck driver. We figured out his monthly income and once you calculate it out he makes the same money per hour here but works double the hours.

He figures he is going to drive back to B.C. on his days off good luck he won't be doing that too often.

Good Luck to him it is not always greener on the otherside of the fence. Guys that have gone to Alberta are stuck their they quit their job in B.C. go back their to try strike it rich it doesn't turn out that way.

bobcat_ron
02-23-2008, 02:39 PM
He's used to it, he spent the better part of 2 years working for an oil pipe line company digging trenches for 12 hours straight, then driving the truck back to camp and wake up the next morning for another 4 kms of endless digging.

Well, now I'm grumpy again, I got back from my Accountant at 2:00 to sign all the paper work from my 2007 year end financial review, good news, I don't have to pay any tax and I get a CPP refund of $260, not bad.
Bad news, I lost over $20,000 in income, I went from net income of $59,000 to just over $39,000, that kinda sucks donkey balls.

Seems money isn't coming in fast enough and there is just too much time spent on the big iron, so the logical solution is to start advertising and get my name back out there again in a crowd of already busy bees. I hate advertising my business, makes me look like a newbie.

He is now employed with another company and he's starting out at the bottom of the Totem pole now, no company truck, no company cell phone, and no benefits for 60 days, he was sooo much better off with my brother, he would have been middle of the Totem pole, company truck and phone and full benefits.

As for your take home income cry me a river  I take home 15 grand less than what you made in 2007.

What about trying to get work doing concrete slab prep or driveway repairs etc. Better invest in a pavement grinder and see if you can get on doing jobs for the muni or work for BA Blacktop or Cewe. There is kilometers of road that is alligator'ed and needs grinding and patched properly.

I went through the paper work again, and even though I was just as busy as 2006, I think it's got something to do with the depreciation from my T190 and the fact that I traded it off or something, this must be what happens when a high school drop out doesn't understand accounting terminology but still writes out the cheques to "The Man" so I don't become a cell mate/butt buddy to a rather scary looking man named "Big Bubba".

I feel bad for the guy that went out to Alberta and I don't doubt for a second that he came back because of his wife. I spent many years working all over Alberta and the North West Territories. Guys like that are very common. Their cell phone never stops ringing and they ether end up going home or getting divorced.

As far as how much money there is to be made, yes it is there and so are the jobs. But it all depends on how you go about it. $30-40/hour is possible but on those jobs almost all of them require you to move there and then you don't get a living out allowance as part of your pay and the cost of living eats it up and it's not worth it. The jobs to make money on...and have no home/family life whatsoever are the camp jobs were you will likely make between $20 and $25 an hour. You work 12 hour days usually 12 on and two off or something similar and get time and a half for your overtime. As well you get your living out allowance which does not get taxed and can be anywhere from $30 to $150 dollars a day depending on the situation. Best situation in my opinion, bring your holiday trailer. You will get paid very well to take it with you.

An average full two week payday at $20/hour and $50/day loa would look about like this
12 12 hour days =144 hours.
144 hours x $20/hour = $2880(figure it all out at straight time. Extra you get for over time goes to taxes...with a good accountant you can get a good chunk of that back though)
12 days of loa = 600
total $3480 take home every two weeks. That would be the low end of the pay scale for someone with not a lot of experience. A seasoned Operator would do better.

Were to go:
Northern Alberta offers bigger wages but less hours. It rains a lot more up there and you end up spending a lot of time waiting on the weather especially in the spring and fall.
South East Alberta the wages are lower but you next to never get a day off from rain. It's almost a desert, it rarely rains and the season is a lot longer. Wages there are starting to go up as well because there is a serious shortage of Operators. So I would say South is the place to go in the Spring, Summer and Fall and North in the winter.
