Test drove a 1978 Chevy CD20 and although it ran out very well for having a 164,000k on it one thing that bothered me was the needle on the gas gauge was on 1/2 tank and as I drove it just kept bobing back and forth from full to empty. Can anyone explain this and is it anything to worry about. As far as a WORK truck I think this truck would be fine. As the body is not in that bad of shape for the year. 2 fenders 1 door 1 cab corner and a paint job and this truck would be ready to go.
Thanks for your input.

Basically, the problem with the fuel gauge could be in the dash, wiring or (most likely IMO) the sending unit in the tank itself.

Not a big deal to repair the sending unit, just a matter of remove/replace. Hardest part is getting at the thing since it goes into the top of the fuel tank.

Other than the fact that you don't know how much fuel is in there and could end up running out when you least expect it, the gauge not working right won't affect anything.
