Anybody used larger vehicle magnets instead of getting a custom paint job on your trucks for advertising. Can the magnets melt on your vehicle. Just curious if anybody uses these.

I've used them a couple years ago. and could not stand them. If it would rain the edge would curl up and it would blow off. And for the money decals are the way to go. Not to much more than the magnets.

I have magnets on my wifes lincoln avaitor $$$$ and i feel ok about putting them on a high end vehicle. their are some draw backs that ive seen with them 1. when its gets cold out they get stiff and fly off while dirving down the road. 2. you have to was both side atleast once every two weeks or they start to act like a sticker (peel them off) and it sounds like the paint is going to come with them. 3. when you take them off to clean you have to set them out in the sun to warm up so they become plyable

I no longer use them, 4 magnet signs made years ago, when I took them off the paint on the trucks had bubbled, scratched & was sun faded. I now have my Logos on the back & side windows. Avoid the magnets IMO

Also if your going to have magnets made dont always go with the cheapest person i shopped around and found my guy who uses nothing but 3M for his digital print. and i had this guy do all my digital print for me. Magnets, Trailer graffics, hats & t-shirts, Business cards and even my trade marked logo up in the left hand corner by my name.. he did it all.. and to give you a ball park for digital print door magnets i paid $120 per magnet but i only use them on my wifes car because she wont have "NO" stickers on her ride.everything i have truck, trailer have digital print on them

I don't like the magnets because if you dust in between them and the paint it will scratch the clear coat. I don't know of many people that paint decals on, I think most us decaled graphics.

Pros and cons to em like anything else.
Pros
Inexpansive, a god alternative for high milage trucks.
You can take them off if your municipality busts balls over commercial vehicles in resi neighborhoods.
You can tak them off when parked at a strip joint
cons
They look cheap
must be removed every other week in high temps or the sun will make them stick too much tearing them when removing.
If left on for a long time the paint underneath will fade.

I had magnets on a truck for a couple years. They were pretty high quality, thick magnet material. I was fearfull that they may blow off too, but I never had a problem! I know too well about the dangers of having them on the paint for too long though... Had to pull them off when washing the truck, then let everything dry well before replacing. Even throw some wax on the spot that they are stuck too more often than the rest of the truck. The paint still faded around the magnets! Not enough to be bad, but I could see it.
I've still thought about getting another set for my 'play truck' because I DO use it for work sometimes, like fertilizing and estimates. I don't really want it lettered up full time, so the magnets may work good for that.

it has been said before and I will say it again as an ex sign pro magnets will ruin a paint job if you are not extremly dilligent to keep everything clean. cut vinyl is the same price or cheaper for a simple door logo. As far as removing it that is simple just get your wifes hair dryer and get the vinyl warm then slowly peel off. If I was to do it now I would go with a mixture of digital and cut vinyl. If anyone is interested I have a 4 year old vinyl cutter with computer and dongle I will sell for cheap.

let me say this to. your paint does not fade just around the magnet. all paint fades in sunlight. when you have something to cover the paint that paint will not fade as quickly. so when it is removed you can see outlines especially on darker paint. This will happen no matter what you do. unless the car lives in the garage all day

Best bet is to move the sign around , for 2 weeks do the door, next 2 weeks side of bed ect.

I would go with lettering. Magnets cause too many problems.

For what it's worth it is cheaper to purchase vinyl signs, and have them installed then it is for magnetic. In my town anyway... I just checked.

Magnetic signs are convenient but you MUST wash both the signs and truck frequently. Also, wax the truck and the magnet (the side that contacts the truck). I just got some new signs a couple of months ago and already notice a slight difference in the paint. I will keep up the washing and waxing in the meantime but will change to vinyl.

This always makes me crack up every spring!
I'll see some 'newbie' come down the road with expensive decals or magnets that might say, for example :
"LAWNSCAPE'S LAWN CARE"
(sorry if I picked someones actual name...this is just an example.)
Duhhhhhhhhh !!! :hammerhead:
What's exactly wrong with this example, grammatically ???

I use the magnetic signs. I have had the same signs on 3 trucks in 5 years. Bonus: Sometimes I put them on my wife's car to torture her.
90% of the time they are not on the truck. I put them on for a few weeks in the spring when I am in "sales mode". I like being stealthly otherwise. I put them on anytime I first meet a customer.

Look again...
It's grammatically correct to use an apostrophe to modify someone's name...for example...the fellow from PA that started this thread :
B]Lasko's Lawn Care[/B] is correct because 'Lasko' is a proper name, but 'Lawnscape' isn't.
The other use for the apostrophe is the 'conjunction'.
(Boomers :Remember the Saturday morning cartoon theme "Conjunction Junction...what's you're function ?!?)
If thought of in 'conjunction' form; LAWNSCAPE'S would be read by someone along the road, as " Lawnscape is "....
....in the same way you would expand you're to " you are ".

And why is all this important ???

I have magnets, but I use my truck for work and personal. I think vinyl looks much more professional, and thats probably what I will do for my next truck.

i have lost 3 magnets. just got the one day before a rainy day.1 i was driven 67mph and lost that one on the freeway. didn't see it. it was at night. next time it started raining when i was driven 25 miles on the free way to buy a new echo 280 trimmer for $175 with spool of line and 6 2 gal oil mix (not stolen it was on cregs list). i was looking out the right side and see that one fly off look at the left side just to see that one fly i couldn't stop for that time in a construction zone. so i learned the hard way if it may rain and you need to drive over 45mph take them off.

Pretty much going to be nothing available at those places other than 'pre-cut' vinal letters and numbers. Certianly NOT going to be attractive.
Unless you want to buy the machinery and vinal to make your own you are going to be better off just finding a vinal graphics place to make something for you.

Dade County pulled quite a few vehicles right after the start of the new year for magnetic signs. Landscapers here have to have permenant signage. The lowballers with the magnets got fines. You can tell the bigger company's trailers. They have the whole sides of the trailer and back end done with paint or vinyl. Trucks to match.

I use magnets on my pick-up truck only because our H.O.A does not allow signs on commercial vehicles. Easy pull in driveway remove signs next morning put back on. never had one blow off or damage paint on door
