JR.- its all on the list...when i get more money
Construct O- that is a fear of mine, especially in the small city that is State College and Penn State University. I park in a parking garage with angled spots so my overnight parking won't be an issue, but if I ever have to drive anywhere else it will be fun...I am buying a rear pintle hitch to act as my "reverse vehicle sensor"
Dirtman- yes...all black look...when i get a fuel tank for it that will be black too, going to tint the front windows a little when the extra funds come in as well....right now i just have to get my satalitte radio hooked up is the only thing i am worried about until school ends in May

Its funny you say that. When I first bought the truck I was anal about keeping it clean, well 6 months later I always planned it out to drive a long distance when it rained so it could get washed. Nothing worse than spending a couple hours cleaning it spotless, then the following day you find out you have to drive 2 miles down a muddy goat path to get to the job site:cry:
I don't bother anymore, I just dump the floor mats out when all the groves are full:laugh:

the list includes:
back rack, fuel tank, 2" level kit, 35" tires (maybe new rims), tinted windows, hide-away strobes, turbo-back straight pipe exhaust
fuel tank, straight pipe, and window tint will be first....level kit and tires will come when the current ones wear out

in about 2 hours they are saying inch-per-hour snow fall so i am sure i will get called back out

As for brine it only works for pre snow use when the road is frosty etc. You need sand and salt for snow.

I work for the state and we have a tanker truck that they send a guy out in even in the snow, even though the brine doesnt work like that. The guy that runs it goes through about 3 tanks and its about a 3000 gal tank and the road looks like nothing was ever done. The state is on a big push to use this stuff but they havent figured out it doesnt work like that but we have to keep using it so it looks good on paper.

I usually run my truck to 400kms and fill the tank. The fuel gauge needle is inbetween the half and 1/4 mark. Truck gets 12mpg loaded or empty can get anymore out of it not bad for a 9400lb truck.

I have been averaging about 14 MPG. Standard cab, 4:88 gearing, short wheel base wrecker package. That includes dragging 20,000lbs of trailer most of the time loaded. City stop and go driving.:weightlifter: I'm beginning to see more of same type of 5500/goose neck rigs on the roads, I have yet to see a similar equipped Ford or Dodge pulling.

Wow, never would have thought you would get that much. Auto or stick? I would like to set up a truck with my old 11' contractors box. There have been some Bullet 5500's right around 30,000, Ford is not an option any more and have seen some leftover GM's but no prices listed. My 7.3 is like 12-13 usually.

Allison Auto. I would never buy a stick shift, after owning this truck. The only thing I don't like about it is the rough ride when it's empty, air ride would be nice.

Yea, you are not kidding. It is by far the most rough riding vehicle I have owned. Even my IH trucks didn't ride that rough. However when its loaded its better. I have considered putting air bags on it but I doubt I will. I think if the cab was set on air like some class 8 trucks it would solve the problem.

Junior you're so green you wouldn't know what to do in snow.
You don't clear roads with loaders unless you've got a massive snowblower and they only do that on mountain roads in like Colorado. And those are much larger loaders.
The only snow removal on the east coast that gets done with loaders is parking lots. They use big snow pushes on the front. They are usually somewhere around 20' wide.
That International with the wing is a pretty truck.
If you don't mind my asking. How much do they pay you to run that truck, Dirt Digger?

Here a 621 with a plow and wing is common for in town roads. Chippewa Falls has Deere and a Case loader for roads. The one school district even has their own 621 with plow and wing setup.

not enough...put it this way, i also intern with the same township as an intern to the township engineer and i make more money doing that
they pay me about the same as a laborer...apparently my CDL doesn't matter
but then again in all honesty i am not all that concerned with the plow pay, i make enough with the internship to cover my truck payment...so the plowing is just something fun that i enjoy, the paycheck is bonus

I already told those southerners you don't plow with a bucket. You'd get a big pusher and even then you wouldn't be doing roads up here like that. Or at least I've never seen it done that way in CT.
If you can't afford a snow blower it's the best way to load trucks. If you can afford a snow blower your best bet is putting big sideboards on a truck that's got a heated body and loading the truck with a snowblower.
You'd have to be careful if it wasn't a heated body since things might stick and freeze up more in an unheated body.
Note to southerners: A heated body runs the exhaust gasses through the bed in order to heat it and then it comes out a set of vents at the back of the bed. Yes it's necessary when things get as cold as they do up here and yes they work.
Dirt Digger2

If it's so cold that exhaust gasses aren't enough you might as well just go home. You'll be more productive.

went out and did some driving in the state park...they don't plow the roads in there all winter so the snowmobilers use them...hell i would if i had a snowmobile...bad part is they pack the snow down a lot, so areas that have sun exposure get very icy...areas that don't develop about a 2 inch crust on top of the snow and under that crust is powder/slush...very difficult to drive in, tires do a lot of spinning and the truck doesn't seem to want to go anywhere....added to that there are steep slops off the sides of many of the roads, and on "straight runs" there are drainage gulley's cut deep...only real idiots take a brand new truck in there, or any truck for that matter

you have any special goodies on your Cummins?...i just ordered a new air intake for it and already straight piped it...i really need to boost my MPG (last tank i hand calculated 9.9MPG)..i think this summer when AAM starts paying me i am going with a new intake manifold and superchip...possibly a 5" exhaust too...nothing too fancy though, i don't want to have to replace my tranny

Nice lookin dodge!!! Definitely needs some 35" rubber on it though. Then it would be amazing!! How do you like the dodge? i'm a chevy guy myself but my dad has a 04 cummins and swears by it. He gets almost 24mpg empty and he figures at the very least the engine of the truck should last forever like a big truck. But we sure can't say the same for the body and interior. :dizzy:

my buddys truck has the 6.0 in it...as far as tint I am debating it, got some quotes already and it won't be too expensive, but PA has pretty strict tint laws and I don't want to be hassled everywhere I go...when the big rubber goes on her I will think more about the tint
Mr. Digger I love the truck so far, I haven't gotten the chance to pull anything real heavy with it yet, but that time will come...i plan on hooking it to 2 loaded hay wagons this summer...16,000 lbs and no brakes...that will be the test

Nope thats a 03-04 Ford mine looks the same.
The Dodge needs some chrome or something to break up the sea of black the little car mirrors don't do much either.
For a work truck I wouldn't want to get it too high off the ground especially if you need to lift something into the box. Even climbing in and out of the box is a pain.

its for a neighbor, i have done some work here and there for her in the past so i took on this project...I wouldn't normally go after a job like this, but it's an easy enough job..its pavers, got them all layed in place...just have to wait for a dry day to topsoil around the edging and sweep in my sand

Around here if it looks like it may have come from factory they won't bother ya much and it depends on what the tint is on. Like the window graphics in the back window of trucks is OK but tint the back window of lets say a mustang and its enough to get ya a ticket if its darker then the factory rating and 18% is way below the factory rated 75%:nono:statey told me so

Raschmid, I think this limb is going to get a bit heavier as I'm going to jump out there with you. I have yet to see a project from the thousands of photos Dirt Digger has shared that has been executed incorrectly.

And can you kindly tell me exactly what is so wrong with the way he has done it?
Absolutely nothing!
I've done it before when installing a curved walkway. That way the customer can see it before you lay any paving, visualize what it will look like and give you their ok. Then you start laying the pavers. No clue why you're on his case over this when it makes no difference.

the walkway was to be done 8 years ago, they had the guy who installed their entrance patio also put base material down for the entire walk, but opted out of the walk at the time...whether they ran out of money or didn't like the contractors work, i don't know...i don't care either...all i had to do was scrape the red stone back and lay my concrete sand...do you think i would lay pavers on top of dirt and play sand?...haha

we had an oppurtunity to plant a few weeks ago, but decided to bale hay instead and missed a dry window for plowing and planting, so now that all the hay is off the ground we have time to plant...that and there was rye in that field last week that got baled last night
AAM is going good so far...money is good...job is good....i just HATE being in the office...but then again all their new fresh out of college hires have to go through what they call "career track" which is that 2 year rotation...so if i wasn't in the office now i would be eventually...but i would rather be in the office in the winter and jobsite in the summer...oh well...i just go where they tell me

Dirt Digger I'm doing some estimating myself right now. How are you liking it? Landed any good ones since you got there?

i will be in managment...no operating for me
estimating is fun...just tedious
we just landed a 23million job doing road work that involves quite a bit of dirt work too...it would be cool if i get sent there...see it from estimating to actual work

i was driving on a side slope this morning and hit a thick patch of mud...the tail end of the truck kicked down the hill and right into the sh!t house...i didn't have it in 4-wheel drive...live and learn i guess
the box and tank just got removed because the body shop guy is probably going to have to take the bed liner out to get the quarter panel off so I am making it easier for him/cheaper for me by taking it out myself
and thats a brand new trailer...its a pretty slick set up...16,500lb GVW too

Should have bought a Ford, they put a lock washer on the truck to keep them from falling apart, dodge must have not got the memo:laugh:

and it looks like a nice trailer, I am curious what brand? I've never seen a trailer like that with that much capacity other than Trailmaster..

Dirtman i know...i just wish someone was in it so atleast the story is funny..instead its just really sad...the thing drug down the side of the truck and ripped the tail light right off...i heard the thump and just thought it hit the bumper...when i got out and saw what happed everyone still sleeping got a nice morning dose of curses
Junior the trailer is a Kauffman...made in N.C. if I am not mistaken...he just took delivery 2 weeks ago...is has hydraulic down but it is balanced perfectly so there is no electric ram, just a heavy duty strut...you pull a pin on either side, stand on the back and it goes down...then when you are loading the machine as you drive forward the deck slowly lowers...made loading that roller a breeze...i didn't have to worry about driving up slick skid loader ramps and the parking brake on that thing is...well...a wheel chock...so that other hydraulic raise flatbed he has just wouldn't have cut it
but you would need a Class A if you ever want to pull it...HAHA
http://www.kaufmantrailers.com/heavy-equipment-trailer-store/Tilt-Trailer-Family/14Ft,-14,000-lb.-Wood-Tilt-p13.html
the standard trailer looks to be 14K but the Capacity Upgrade option must be what took it to 16.5K...i was pretty surprised myself to see that on the sticker for a bumper pull trailer
