DirtDigger....that is nice country. That's a good lifestyle for sure. Hope you guys do good this year on your hay......prices have gone up 30-40% here this year and the farmers are still gettin' hurt because fertilizer has doubled. Keep 'em coming, and yea, I miss the smell of fresh cut hay also or standing in the middle of a corn field and listening to the corn pop and crackle as it grows.......
Dirt Digger2
02-26-2008, 05:39 PM
well the next big picture day is when we will be chisel plowing and disking all our fields...should be around mid April if the weather lets us...my 886 will be hooked to the chisel and the 4020 will have a 12' disk and 12' culti-packer behind it...hopefully we can knock it all out in one day if we start around 5am and run 13 or 14 hours but those will most likely be the next picture sets (unless i get down to the construction expo on Thursday)....we got our soil tests back and its looking like our big hay field needs to be fertilized bad ....which sucks, but you gotta spend money to make money
Dirt Digger2
02-26-2008, 05:53 PM
last ones for now...when i can only make it home from school to work on weekends we really have to work around the clock to get everything done...by the time summer break for me rolls around its time to plant and the tillage and sh*t spreading has to already be done
we worked until about mid-night this night finishing up the barn/stable/pile clean-up
thats me on the loader and my buddy on the 4020
and the last one is from this past fall...we use what we got, we were harvesting the corn maze that we planted for a restaurant owner in town, that is a real good job $$$...that we landed again for this year

not at home i don't...i have too much time on my hands when i am at school...but during the summer i am lucky if i eat dinner at home 2 days a week...usually on Sunday night i eat at home and then watch the Simpson's...haha, but I'll usually work 6:30am-4:30pm for the excavating company, then go to the farm and work 5pm-9pm...then roll into town and get some fast food for dinner...its tough sometimes until the paycheck comes in

Dirtdigger2, I like the pics. What number is the New Holland tractor? I have a TN70 that I have had good luck out of.
Dirt Digger2
02-26-2008, 09:43 PM
i'm not real sure...its a TN something i believe, its a guy down the roads tractor that does some field mowing with it. He has had more problems with that tractor then you could ever imagine. axle seals, 4x4 linkages, the wheel fell off once...just one thing after another...he takes good care of it to so its not neglect. I feel bad for him because he can't afford a whole lot and whenever you think hes making a few bucks he has to dish out $1500 for a repair.
i dont like NH tractors, seems they are always in the shop. A farm down the road demo-ed a bigger tractor and in the 2 week demo the service tech had to come out twice! to fix a problem. new holland hay equipment on the other hand can't be beat

yea man...that old corn picker is my buddies uncles...this thing is scary to get near, he won't let us run it and quite honestly i wouldn't want to. We were searching for a combine to buy for a few thousand bucks this winter but decided instead to turn 2 new fields we just picked up into hay instead of corn
bobcat_ron...it can get expensive, especially when everything always seems to break at the worst times ($800 for a part for our kicker baler last year during 1st cutting...the extra time for the part to come in let rain get on the hay and ruined it :hammerhead:) but those are the joys of not being married, i can spend my money on diesel and equipment rather then flowers and jewelry
always having fun...
I wish I had some hay ground here. It has been the perfect storm for guys that put up hay. Tight supplies from a hard Winter and not a great hay crop have pushed prices to $200 a ton if you can find it. Next year I am going to bale up my front yard.:weightlifter:

might have an even better year Tom...i'm waiting to hear back from Highland Orchards on whether we can lease all their hay ground in return for 10% of our crop...or something like that...if we get all those fields we might be busier then we can handle in the weekends and evenings so we might have to bale some for just mulch hay so we don't have to worry about getting it off the ground before rain...hopefully i will be getting that call later today or tomorrow

every now and then Tom...luckily we have never really had anyone go in there and wreck it, we will see tracks in the summer when its dry from people going in and spinning tires but doing no real damage. But i did that last saturday when it hammered down rain, if someone would have gotten in there that night they could have done a lot of damage to those fields

tom, the guy from highland orchards and i have been playing phone tag the last 2 weeks, i was on vacation last week so i dont know yet if we have the fields, he is in the office tomorrow so i will know then
would you guys, or would you know anyone, interested in starting a hay or mulch hay contract for this summer? we are looking to sell our hay this year before we bale it, that way we don't have to store it
im going to call agway, ACE, and other stores of that type tomorrow as soon as i know if we have the extra land or not...i would love to sell them 1000 bales per cutting and get it out of our site and into our wallets

yea they are both fairly loud, the 4020 has a straight stack with no muffler and the IH has a straight stack right off the turbo, no muffler....they both sound very nice, the Deere is a little more throaty and the IH sounds a little more like an old truck

What do you guys think a fair price for a Ford 8N with an industrial loader and power steering be? I just recently Did alot of rear end and clutch work 2 it. I'm asking $4800 do you guys think that is about right? I will include a link to the video of the tractor.

4800 seems fair...i sold mine (the exact one in the pictures, new tires and all for 2400)
at the same time though you could spend a little more and get a better tractor, i couldn't imagine having to do loader work on an 8N....it would make for a very miserable day

A year ago a local dealer had an 8N with quite a bit of engine work done to it I don't think it had a loader but the asking price was $3800.
If I was to own a 8N I would not want a loader on it. I think I would go with Ford 2000 or something along those lines.

Yea moving a load of dirt with an 8N is not really that fun, it takes the better part of the day and is hard on the tractor. I have actually had a few local guys com over and look at it and they were looking at using around their house and in the garden, so i guess that wouldn't be to bad doing that little bit of work with it. I just recently bought a case 95xt though and I'm sorry i didn't get a skid steer sooner. Its ridiculous how much more work a skid steer can do without all of the work on the machine. According to the manual for ford for every 10 hours of operation you should expect to do 1 hour of work to the machine. That is pretty major when it takes you 3 days 2 do a job and you have 3 hrs of down time during that time.
Dirt Digger2
05-04-2008, 01:19 PM
the good thing about those 8N's is they are extremely easy to work on. I did a complete Valve job on mine in a few hours, rebuilt the governor, rebuilt the carb, and a few other small things....the worst part with those tractors is draining all the fuel to take the hood off...i couldn't imagine having to do that with that loader in the way
machineaholic
05-04-2008, 01:26 PM
yea, you cant do that with the loader in the way. you have to take the loader off, which isnt that hard to do just time consuming. well if you don't have another machine to lift the loader off it is hard and you better have a big tree. The loader make all of the little things hard to get at but it can still be done.
Fieldman12
05-04-2008, 01:39 PM
An 8n is a good tractor for someone that has a mini farm that does not want to spend much money. They was never intended to be a serious tractor of any kind. I think probably with the loader it would be worth around $4,000.00. Only thing is for not much more money you can get a whole lot more loader tractor.

and the one guy at work decided it would be funny to let the air out of one of my tires on a friday afternoon....so i took it off the truck, sprayed it with soap water looking for the leak until i called him thinking it might have been him (i almost took the tire off the rim to check for a nail)....well paybacks a b*tch...what made it funnier was he not only had to search for the floor jack i hid in the shop but it was raining when he took it down

yea it rained off and on today and when i got to this job the sky opened...i had to take a backhoe to another job in the morning then got back to the shop and serviced this one...then at 1 they sent me to this job because it could be done rain or shine....the guy is going to spread the black gold with his own little loader tractor so all i had to do was dig out the silt that accumulates around the inlet of the pond....its a different experience not being able to see your bucket and just having to guess where you are digging...i dont know how clam shell dredges do it
getting back out was difficult to...the pond is at the bottom of a hill and the hoe really didn't want to get up the rain slick hill

until you get the fuel bill...haha, we had the rake hooked to the restored M and it was doing fine until it ran out of gas and there was only 1 gallon left in a can on the entire farm:confused:....so i hooked the 886 to the rake and finished...overkill maybe, but atleast i had the radio...we will be doing a little tillage this week and dropping about 20 acres of hay Wed. assuming the weather holds

One time I was raking some Timothy with the old roll bar rake with the only tractor not being used at the time and it was a John Deere 4555 4x4. I thought I looked a little stupid out their also with a 155 Hp. pulling a small rake.

Dirt Digger2

the backhoe is a 2002 or 2003 with 3500 hours on her...it has 3 stick controls technically it is 4 stick(bucket, dipper, boom, extenda-hoe) and two foot pedals to move the boom back and forth
i love these style controls over pilot or wobble sticks, for me they dig a lot faster and are much more responsive/accurate then the pilots (until you hit a well line like i did today)...take a look at the crummy video i have posted and you will get a rough idea

you talk about responsiveness and i know a guy that is good i mean really good.... i dont even know how to explain how good this man is.... the only way i know how to explain how good he is is to say that John deere specially makes backhoes to his specifications. if something goes wrong or breaks on that backhoe that isnt suppose to john deere will send someone out here free of charge to figure out what went wrong with it..... but the only thing that they have changed on his backhoe so far, that i know of, is they put more hydraulic flow to the backhoe so it doesnt have as much power on the front bucket but the controls on the back are alot quicker to respond...
but i have seen this man dig an eight foot deep deepend on a pool and he will dig the whole thing and get off and check it with the lazer and be off half an inch.. you would have to see him run his equipment to see how good he is...

Yep those are the Case 4 sticks. There’s 2 foot pedals to move left and right. One for each direction. These controls takes some time to get used to especially with feathering the controls but once you get the hang of it you will never want to go back to wobble sticks. My dad ran 4 sticks for over 30 years and that’s all he ever got in his backhoes. But the M we just got he decided to get pilots and boy was that a mistake. There is no feel to them what so ever and my dad looked like a fish out of water when we first got it. He only got them because he thought it would be just like the excavator but its completely different. I first learned on 4 sticks when i started on our L and didn’t like them at first but now i miss them even though i didn’t really run them that much.

jlm theres a lot of guys out there that can do that...my boss will go out and dig a pit that needs to be 18'x25' for example and 6 foot deep...he wont even take a tape measure and its done...i love working with the guy because i can learn so much just by watching, to tell you the truth i dont even mind laboring when he is the operator because he does so much with the machine that i dont have to with a shovel

yes, foot pedals operate the swing and levers for everything else...the two little levers you see in my video are for the stabilizers and the "7th lever" is for the boom lock

since i am only 14 i havent really ran alot of equipment but i have ran a mini excavator quite a bit and just from watching him dig a couple pools i have learned alot.....
and when i say he is good i mean he is digging pools you have to be with in a quarter of an inch or less....... and he can get that close with out getting off the machine but a time or two....... but like i said i havent been around this business along time but bout everyone I know has heard of him...........

I wear earplugs on every machine, mostly because I got started on our Case 855D. That machine is one loud SOB, especially when the ROPS start shakin'! It sounds like that 955 might be the same way. By the way, the U-Shift has to go... I guess if you're used to it, it's like anything else. We've always opted for the straight shift.

the 955 is a loud machine and so is our 943, anything more then loading trucks i stick foam in the ears
the 955 is a powershift machine, it is not hyrdostatic so that is why there is no V-patten shifter like you will have on your newer machines...its all the same the U pattern just takes an extra half second to shift over, its the same as our Case 550G dozer, just on a larger scale
we have this loader for sale is anyone is interested

Yeah, I know. Our 855D is also a powershift and so are all of the 550's that I've ran... we just opted for the straight shift where you push the control up to go forward and pull back to reverse. After being used to those, whenever I ran a U-shift is just felt ackward. No big deal if you're used to it.

we wrap our rain pits with geo-textile as per plans and we put rosin paper on top of the stone before we put the dirt back in...this is how we install septic trenches, i dont like using geo-textile as much as engineers like to assign it because i feel it clogs too easily, it is impossible to keep it clean when you are rolling it out and cutting it, so it is almost doomed from the start
no we don't use that sleeved pipe...waste of money

Looks like the lift bar was showing a a little of the strain of lifting also.
Does the tree roots count as backfill:)
So does did that system call for a clean out at the distribution box?:usflag:
Dirt Digger2

the lifting bar is as old as the company, the bend has been there for a long time and it has lifted much heavier objects then this
the roots will be pulled out and mixed around the lot, the trenches are too shallow to throw them in there
its not a cleanout but an "inspection port" besides the fact the inspector wants one it makes it a lot easier to come in and locate the D-box if we ever need to get in there again...rather then probe the entire yard it is a lot easier to locate a 4" cap

I was looking at the tanks height in relation too grade and it reminded of some of the stories my Buddy has told me of deep tanks they have witnessed in there pumping business.
Too date 8+ foot deep with no riser is there record.
Had another grading job where a septic installer had put in a new system on a house remodel and the dumby put the tank above ground level on one side and then took dirt and mounded it up too cover the tank. There was a slight slope and now the yard has a big bump in it.
If the guy would have just dropped it in elevation or moved it's position over 10 foot it would have been in a almost flat spot.
Dirt Digger2

yea i screwed up once putting in a pump tank and there is a bump now...luckily it is way in the woods and you can't see it from the house...
8 feet and no rise i am suprised they found the tank in general...that fill dirt must have been trucked in after the homeowner had been living there, the tanks in the picture got risers to grade, i wasn't there today because i had a dozer job to go do and will get pictures of that up tomorrow...but right now i am going out to hit the watering holes

i didn't get any "final" shots because i was looking to get out of there when i was covered in dust but the last 3 shots give a general idea, i just hadn't done the final touches on them

nice work dirt......... how hard is it to run a dozer? I have never ran one or been around any for that matter and i have always wanted to run one.
Dirt Digger2
07-19-2008, 08:41 PM
its not hard to run one, anyone can hop on and move it
the trick is getting the feel for the blade and training your eyes to be looking at both sides at once, you also need to learn how to cut without washboarding which can be tricky
the biggest thing with a small finish dozer is learning its limits, how much it will push, how it turns under load, how steep of a bank you can take it on sideways, etc...the middle bank in the picture was nothing, maybe a 2:1 slope but the lower bank which you can't see very well was almost around a 1:1 (or a 45 degree angle) nothing like bracing yourself on the downhill ROPS post with your feet

The thing about a loader and a dozer is a loader you spend all day trying to keep the bucket in the ground where a dozer you spend all day trying to keep the blade out of the dirt. It is a technique of quickly readjusting the blade consistently to keep it from making speed bumps or divots in the ground.

Nice grading work!
Yeah I know what your talking about when your working on slopes sideways, I took that new komatsu we just bought and a good 1:1 slope and damn near fell out of the seat. I don't wear seat belts in any of the equipment, but I was seriously thinking about putting it on! It's amazing the slopes that those LGP's can go on.
Dirt Digger2
07-19-2008, 10:18 PM
jlm you can see the tips of the blade on either side and you can feel what you just did in the seat when you run it over, thats basically it. You can't see what the blade just did because you can't see down between the blade and the tracks...running dozer is a feeling thing, since its a tracked machine if you feel a "teeter-totter" feeling then you have a high spot, if you feel your butt going up and down then you have a washboard, etc...
BIGBEN is right, unless you are cutting a lot of dirt you never really want your blade to gouge into the ground...running dozer takes a lot of skill that i am still learning, i can do a good job when i go out there, but it just takes me longer then guys doing it for their whole life

no the bottom slope wasn't 1:1 in those pictures...the homeowner wanted the lengths of the banks to be symmetrical but he didn't care about the slopes so i cut the lower side down to a much lower slope (going to the trees at the bottom)...maybe 5:1 but that left me to have to cut the bank down to a 1:1, it was pretty steep and i didn't take the dozer on that sideways, i had to do that up and down

ok i learned this 1:1 this year and i remember most parts of it but i cant remember how it is set up... like length over hieght or whatever... no thats not it i cant remember how you write it out like do you mark the x-axis first or the y-axis first. and my math teacher used to say something like width over length or something was the rule to writing it out.

Construct'O

Starting at the bottom of the fill or slope add a foot of dirt then you come 3 feet in.If you add 2 feet of fill then you need to come in 6 feet.
On big fills in the old days the forman would be busy setting grade stakes as the fill came up then when you got on it with the dozer to finish you could use his grade stakes to slope the fill to the top.
If he was slow to set stake you might have to much dirt or not enough depending on how close you crowded the slope as you was comingup.
If you was working with mud as the scrapers hauled in the fill the mud would be pumped out making the fill slope bigger, then you would have to trim it off and work it up the slope toward the top of the fill.
Also if you didn't crowd the stake the slope would be shy dirt then you would have to push dirt over the side to make the slope out to the slope stake.
Usually ran the slope up and down along the stakes and when up to grade you could run them sideway and take out the stakes as you would the slope sideway down to the bottom.
If you had a good stake forman it was fairly easy.Just need to work the slope as they was coming up and packing them in to have a finished fill as it was coming up.
AS with Dirtdiggers slope it was a variable slope because of the change fron the one end to the other.Actually he had to blend it in to match with the slope already there.:usflag:

and it was a pain in the @$$ because the lower terrace from above looks like a tear-drop cut in half so over where it ties into the existing slope near the house there really is no room for the dozer to fit in there so i was having to cut the flat spot by facing up and down the bank rather then going across it, i also needed to keep positive flow away from the septic tanks which are right between the house and the fill, it was a tricky little job that a D5 would have been nice for all of the initial pushing but i am glad i had the tiny 550 for touching things up

Indian River Inlet in southern delaware...
we are starting a site work job tomorrow which should be fun...i have to pump poo in the morning but if i get done in time i have to go haul dirt out in the Pete so hopefully i will be able to snap some pictures...we have a loader and trackhoe on site right now so i most likely will be on this job start to finish unless we start more septics or roof pits this week that require me to run backhoe

after i got my pump outs taken care of they sent me to the dump site for all of the dirt being trucked out of the 15' driveway cut we are making...we got lucky and a woman is taking the dirt that lives a half mile from the job...she lives across from a sports center that has stadium lights and hates them so she said we could dump at her place if we built her a berm...this is only half the total dirt to be hauled...its a start but we will be trucking all day tomorrow...this is 35 tri-axle loads

That's some neat looking soil layers there, it's soil on top then an up and down layer of shale.

yea it was interesting...working at the berm i owuld get some loads of really good fill...then loads of grey shale and other loads of brown shale....the shale was soft and relatively easy to dig which was good because i would have hated to get big rocks when i was building that berm...all in all i think the berm is holding 50 some tri-axles and i hauled 16 tandem axle loads in there...and since the job is only a 1/2 mile away from the dump site on one road you can imagine the weight we were putting on the trucks:dizzy:

i have to take our dozer to the job either tomorrow or thursday so i will probably stop at the berm real quick and blade it off nice...i finished at 4:30 today and my head was pounding from running the truck and 943 all day so its a bit rough still with track marks and a few small windrows left but overall it turned out very nice
for those wondering...the left bank is will be sloped at 14% and the right wall will have a retaining wall built...the deepest cut was around 11 feet

dozerman we sub out the raking and seeding...we will do it on small jobs if not a whole lot is going on...busy work basically, but 90% of the time someone else comes in to do the raking and seeding, which is fine because i hate raking, seeding, and mulching...theres more money in running equipment i guess my boss figures then running a rake

if you are out that way swing down Gahligerville Road and about 1/2 mile down on the right is the job i am working

actually all were idling in this picture...haha we were up at the truck looking at plans...i was in the case, boss was in the volvo and another guy in the loader...the CAT isn't ours it is the homeowners who is doing that big retaining wall (he owns a big pool company) its a brand new 297 with 25 hours on it
ah i see sanners towing that busted a1 truck again
yea...he said he broke a "jaw"...i guess when you translate his broken english into truck talk he broke a universal...based on talking with the driver of the delivery truck i bet that truck has had a very hard life with him behind the wheel...

actually i live in west chester which is far from the middle of nowhere and this pit is located near king of prussia...yes there are regulations that vary between townships, usually we only install one pit per house but for some reason this one gets two...they usually are not this large but it really depends on soil characteristics, erosion is a big problem around here as well as re-establishing the water table

haha! leigh richards!
hey dirt digger, consider yourself one LUCKY man to be digging in that soil. come about 30 miles north east of you to where i am, and anything over 1 ft down is solid red shale. it would take us half the day to dig that hole, even with that size machine! feels like this all day in the machine!:hammerhead:

oh believe me i know...you can almost see it but in the one corner of the bed i ran into two seams of what looked to be granite and thought "oh here we go, this is going to be a long rough day" but after i got past them it was really smooth sailing
