How do you know if you need a weighted license plate?

no. In NC, we have a weighted license plate or tag that if you tow a certain amount then you have to have one instead of a regular license plate on your truck.

Don't know. When I bought my Sierra 2500 I asked for 9500 pounds. Later I found out that DOT gives you some if you're hauling a trailer. I guess the extra tag weight was assumed to be for the truck itself. Anyway, I have a pretty blue "Weighted" tag on it! Tony
Talk to someone at DOT and try to decipher all the double talk and post it when you find out.

I was told anything over 6,000 lbs. needed weighted tags. Heck, most trucks weigh over 6,000 lbs. sitting by themselves. My F-250 weighs close to 7,500.

Anyway, you pay for the weight. The higher the weight, the higher the price. I have my tags at a GCWR of either 15K or 18K, I can't remember. It typically costs me a little over $200/year.

Of course, the joke is I have never heard of anyone getting pulled and weighed with landscape equipment. The only ones I know of that have been pulled and weighed are the guys running F-350s and 450s pulling car haulers. There have been some pretty hefty fines for those guys pulling loads over the weight of their tags.

Also, I only think this applies to commercial. Pulling big RVs and such doesn't count.

In illinois you need a Green Commercial plate...and they go by letter....Ex. B Plate = up to 8,000lb, D=12,000..F=16,000..H=26,000..and so on..I have a D plate on my 2500HD

If you are in business and look like you are in business you need a tag that will cover your normal loaded weight. For ex. truck 6000 trailer 1800 load 3000 = 10800 so you would need in Ky a 12000. we run 18000 on 3/4's and 24000 on tons.

I fibbed. I have a 9k plate, I wanted 9500 but they only come in 1k increments. Tony
