View Full Version : when to trim
Normally I trim after I mow, but when there are leaves on the ground, when I go to trim, they all fly back over onto the lawn. Is it better to trim before I mow?

This late in the season you should pretty much be able to trim every third week or so because the turf has slowed down so much.
We trimmed once the middle of Oct and then the first week of Nov was it for the edges. :D

I always trim before I mow so my mower can mulch up the trimmings, leaves, etc. left behind. :)
Isn't it a pain to trim beforehand though since you have to trim everything...After I mow, some places just don't need it, and it saves time.

In the fall, I always blow leaves off all pavement and away from all edges (fences, beds, trees in lawn, buildings, etc.). Then mow, and trim if necessary.

That's a good idea, Jim. ;)
You might be right, Oryan, that I'm spending needless time trimming. Once you have a feel for a place, though (say, after you've done it a few times), you pretty much know where you need to trim and not.
I've heard said on here before that some folks save time by trimming after mowing but I've always believed it saved me time to trim [i]before[i] since the mower can pick up/mulch up what I've trimmed. As an experiment, I might try doing it all the other way for a week and check my results... ;)

The reason why many will do the trimming last is because then they wont over/under trim. If you are a solo operation then you will know what has to be trimmed and where since you are familiar with how close your machines can get to bedlines/foundations etc.

Kris,
Yeah, that's kinda what I was trying to say. ;)
The thing I wonder, and why I think I might experiment going the other way, is I'm probably in automaton mode on places I'm familiar with and I'll bet I'm running the trimmer over areas that don't need it just because I always do... :alien:
Did that makes sense?

I agree with kutnkru, trimming is not needed every week this late in the season. I like to blow all the leaves from the curb and driveway back onto the lawn so I can then vaccum them up. During the summer I like to edge and trim before mowing the turf.

No warm season grasses growing this time of year. No trimming since Oct 1.
