I know that PTO is the "engaging mechanism" to get the blade to start to turn, or to make the blade stop turning.

But what does PTO stand for?

I've seen it written P.T.O. and even my JD manual refers to it as "engage the pto......" But doesn't say what PTO means.

Any info?

Originally it it for the power take off for a 540 rpm attachment on a tractor, but they incorparated it to the term for turning on the blade on your prime mover.

In addition to tractors, PTO's are also used on trucks of all sizes to drive hydraulic pumps, winches etc.

PTO = Parent Teacher Organization. EVERYbody knows that! I don't know WHERE you guys are coming from...
The tractor at the school even has this acronym on it. It says that right under "Donated by". Boy, some people have the strangest notions!

Hey man, I is from Canada (eh) - I thought it was Parent Teacher Association! :D ;)

Hmm...... That means the boom truck at work musta been donated by the same people 'cause it's got "PTO" marked on the dash!
