I have close to 20 accounts and I havent spent a dime on marketing, except business cards (around $50). I knocked on doors and passed out cards when the moment was right. I spent about $3800. I got:

srm-230 Echo Trimmer $300
pe-230 Echo Edger $300
pb-251 Echo Blower $175
BOP Quick 32 Samurai $2759
Jungle Jim's Triminator II Trimmer Rack $96
Folding ramps $60
gas cans $20
gloves, hat, hearing protection, safety glasses $40
1000 business cards from vistaprint.com

Im working out of the back of my truck (which I got for $1500 a couple years ago). Everything fits perfectly and I didnt have to spring for a trailer. Im doing 98% residential.

:cool2: I just wanted some of the other new guys to see that you can get a decent start without going in debt or spending 10 grand...:usflag:

so....98% residential means you have one commercial account and 49 residentials....looks like you've been busy

I started with a snapper pro hydro 36 in w/b, shindiawa m242 with trimmer and edger attachment, echo pb 200 and a 12' x 86" single axle trailer for a little less than 5,000. So roughly the same amount as you, just with an extra 1200 for a trailer. Good job bud, great minds think alike!!

What do you think would have happen IF you put an ad in the local news paper ?

hey willjones, we ALL have to start somewhere and not all of us had deep pockets and/or big money behind us, right from the get go. there's nothing wrong with a guy working out of HIS pickup truck... it sure beats picking up illegals at the street corner, to get YOUR jobs done. i agree with the saying work smart, not hard... but it's not very smart and/or patriotic to be "using" illegals. i'd rather see 10 (legal) guys working out of their pick ups than 1 lco "working" nothing but illegals. moreover, if you're good at what you do, there's no reason to sweat competition. i find it funny... how many larger lco's have made disparaging comments about "fly-by-nighters" yet employ illegals on a regular basis? seems alittle hypocritical doesn't it? just my opinion. go for it, jones.

Oh, Im not saying there is anything wrong with advertising. I know it is a indispensable tool for growth. I was just saying that I dont think it necessary for a man to spend a lot of cash out of the gate as it may be more wisely used elsewhere (like equipment, insurance, etc). This was my experience. I know there are differing scenarios and opinions...

Nothing like seeing one of the big boys in there Isuzu NPR Crew Cab flat bed with three Z's, a white guy driving and 5 Mexicans packed in there. Makes me sick. Unfortunately, this isn't going to stop. There's too much money being made...

Great job!
I started my business for about $2,400.00(You can see my rig in my signature). You have ALOT more reliable mower though lol.

Way to go. The most valuable aquisition so far is your list of 20 accounts. And they were free.
