Is it okay to ask for a down payment? If so what is the best way to ask?

Yes, but usually only if the job takes more than a day or two.

You can say it's a retainer to put the customer on your schedule. And less than half would be more appropriate, in my opinion.

If you were the customer would you feel comfortable giving money before any work or materials arrive?

I ask for a deposit only when their is a significant outlay of supplies and material, your outlay is 20 hrs labor and some mix gas and oil.

Ya, I agree I would be embarrassed or silly to ask for a deposit on a job like this unless I did not trust the guy or had a bad feeling but then I probibly wouldent have taken the job if that was so

Ok , do it right . Look into state laws about deposits on home improvment projects. Yes that is what this buss is, a form of home improvement. In Mass the law states no more then 1/3 . In cali any job over $1000 the law is no more then 10%. So check your states law and ask for that. then simply state" Im going to need a small deposit to scedule this job" most people expect it.
