I still havent gotten around to fertilizing yet... My earthway spreader rotted out from not washing the fert off... Its only 3 or 4 years old to... Piss me off.... O well, Makes a good excuse to go and buy a new Millermatic 252 welder... Just the welders about 10X more money then the spreader :hammerhead: LOL

Hay Jon, just out of curosity, How much are those Grandstands? I seen a 25hp 48 or 52" down in florida brand new for $6500 and couldnt belive how cheap the stupid thing was..... Seems like everything is 30% less down there....

Among all of us, we must buy huge quantities of consumables like fertilizer and lawn seed. I don't know what the markup is, but what if we agreed to buy our supplies from a single chain in exchange for a discount.

Anybody familiar with buying cooperatives (if that's the right term), who could tell us if this idea would be worth pursuing?

Pristine PM
05-20-2010, 09:04 PM
Farm Co-ops sort of work like this, but in all honestly... it might take more work then it is worth, we buy our fert fairly cheaply. about 14 a bag. Unless you deal directly with Cargill, you aren't going to get it cheaper.

Jaynen
05-21-2010, 10:29 AM
$15 a bag for fert? Is it sulfur coated? How big is the bag? Surprized you dont got a lesco spreader triple.

I use Holmes Agro / Agrico in Orangeville. Close to me and well priced.

For Seed I use Speares Seed or Master Turf if I want a custom blend. FS in Stayner is good as well.

When Ont banned "cosmetic" products the publicity was everywhere. But since last year I've been seeing increasing products like Roundup (ready to use) and now weedkiller in local ads and on chainstore shelves.

But not a word in the press about what non-licenced homeowners or LCOs can apply. Anybody know exactly what these recent changes are?

If you don't get struck by lightning the wet grass will clog your machine so much you'd just as soon be zapped. No.

I think it will really depend on the area. I have seen some areas that look OK no but will have a better idea next week when I start doing estimates and clean-ups if possible. My area in Oak Ridges is a swamp and will likely stay that way until close to May. I took my son for a bike ride around the block and was really shocked at how much damage was caused by the city side walk plow this year. Lots of nice big strips of turf missing up to 6" on either side of sidewalk and also pretty deep depressions from the tractor tires on either side of sidewalk.

Hey dingybigfoot, how are you liking the Grandstand? I am planning to get a 36" model this year with the striping kit and OCDC. I might pick up a few larger properties this year - over an acre (already in conversation with a few potential clients) but most of my properties are smaller (1/5 - 1/2 acre) but several have small gates with large backyards. Hoping the GS will give me a productivity boost on smaller props, allow me to finish the day with a bit of energy left over, and allow me to mow a few bigger places until next year when I will likely invest in a 60" G3.

I have around 9 of them. Most of them are from Voth Sales and Service out of Tillsonburg. Give him a call if you are looking for new. Best built unit for the price. You have to get the sides and cab protector if you are using it for anything else besides just salting and dirt. We fit a ton of leaves into ours and lots of garbage.

Pristine PM

They hold up great! The best part of them is the 2 pistons. Downeasters have a scissor lift which seem to break with the stress of salting, and Truckcraft while better, is still a tripod, having two pistons means you can stay up in the air while salting.

I was out doing some estimates yesterday and had a good laugh when I saw my first astroturfed lawn (front & back). :dizzy: It was the property beside the place I was estimating and when I drove up I noticed how green the lawn was and started to wonder if one of the large franchises had been out fertilizing already. It was more realistic than I would have expected but it still looks just a little off. When I left I was thinking that I should get the owner of the house the contact info for the person who owns the house on Bathurst with the plastic palm tree so he can dress it up a bit.

I took pics I will try to get them up later.

Actually I think the 2 companies I saw driving around the most before the last snow were Greenlawn & Weedman. They both looked like they were working, but I could be only 1/2 right about that.

Spring Masters does seem to start early but at least they pace themselves and are able to continue aerating through the spring, summer, and fall. Good on them!

No incorrect. Spring Masters only aerate in the spring, about 1-2 months, not during the summer and fall. They have a lot of book clients to get done in the spring, so that's why they don't care if the grass is dormant, if their is snow or the ground is still frozen.

A lot of information is region specific, so i was excited when I found this thread!
One question I have is, what kind of grass seed mix do you recommend for over seeding? and when do you
put it on? Thanks!

Try the Pickseed Town and Country mix.

Thanks. Do you know what the seed mix is? I over seeded this last weekend using a 40% Kentucky blue, 40% creeping red fescue and 20% perennial rye mix.
Hope it works well. Does any one on this thread use Fiesta? wondering how hard it is to get into. Thanks for any info!

Dodge Boys

The grass seed mix you used sounds like the Pick Seed Tuff Turf brand... Works good and tolerates the abuse of the Canadian climate..... Fiesta, that's a whole other story.... Haven't had very good luck with the product, it's expensive and IMO doesn't work very well.... Does anyone know any good company in ON for paint? I'm looking to give my old tractor a new paint but I know the Canadian Tire spray cans just won't do the job. Looking for a high end paint. I heard about a epoxy primer with urethane paint. If anyone know info on this please let me know.

alanauer
02-20-2012, 12:08 PM
The main aspects are preparation and application. The paint is the least of it.

Prep: a portable sand-blaster isn't costly and does the best job. Thoroughly mask or protect where you don't want the sand or whatever -- on the machine and you.

App: Spray cans are easy but costly. Brush-on is cheap but slow and ugly close-up. I'd buy or rent a spray rig. What kind depends on how big the surfaces and how much control you want.

Paint: The best is for aircraft (the name Delrin comes to mind but I'm not sure) but it's twice the price and you don't need that quality. Farm-supply stores sell farm implement paint in quantity, including in brand colours.

Timing: unless you have a paint booth, warm enough to dry, windless, and before bugs start flying around.

Don't quote me on this, since none of this is really something we deal in too much but...

PT deck, $25 per square foot, you will need railing and steps on top of that.

Asphalt, depends on if your just topping or all new or demo, but new base and 2" asphalt I think runs about $5-7 per sq.ft.

Need some help guys, does anyone use an enclosed trailer?

Whats the O.P.P like in your area, or MTO?
Do you get inspected alot?
Are there certain laws about trailers, enclosed mostly, that I need to know about?
Does everything need to be entirely secured inside an enclosed?

alanauer
03-16-2012, 02:36 PM
I think you're OK if the tow vehicle is rated for the trailer weight, the safety chains are kosher, it's plated, there's nobody riding in it, the lights meet standards at night and the brake one works, and the load is properly secured. I'm not aware of any HTA differentiation between open and closed except that load securing would be less of an issue with closed.

Yeah I guess so, thanks sir.

What are you transporting inside? regular lawn maintenance equipment?

I don't think the OPP can do anything about the enclosed trailer, if they pulled you over, they can't search your trunk because its personal stuff, same for the trailer.

alanauer
03-18-2012, 10:09 AM
Correct. Law enforcement personnel can demand licence, ownership, and proof of insurance (and a breathalyzer test). If they further ask where do you live, where you've been or are going, what's under the seat, if they may search your trunk or trailer, what's in your pockets, if you've ever been arrested, ... yes, you do have a legal right to decline.

But you can't leave until they return your documents (unless you have duplicates with you -- in which case everything would start all over again). And if, while supposedly awaiting the document check to be radioed back to them, they find something that gives them "probable cause" for a more complete search, well, you get the idea.

(Besides your rights, you have much more equipment than they. All they have are a radio, cuffs, and gun.)

Yes just standard equipment, push mower, walk behind, a couple riders, and hand helds. Thanks for the idea's guys! I'm leaning towards an open trailer at the moment now.

Does anyone know how to deal with some golden dust that is coming out of a tree?

I did not see this last year but I am seeing it this year. It is very wierd, I am thinking that it might be infected with something???

Should I post a picture of the tree? Would that help any?

So for you non licensed guys, who do you use for Weed and Pest Control. I have a client that was not very happy with DR GRN last year and wanted to know if I could recommend someone. I said I would look into it, I am hopping to get lots of work from him so I want to keep him happy.

I have not got any people that asked me to use pesticides that require you to have a lic.

I can't take off the Christmas lights because a branch literally grew through a piece of the wire:laugh: I know it does not sound real but believe me you gotta see to believe.

The tree could be several species. A photo of a leaf might help.

Curious what a "snow mode" does in a camera.

Some guys order their chems from out of province but I don't know exactly where.

It makes the picture that you are taking more clear. But, in the summer it is the worst feature you can have your camera set on because it makes it very blurry.

I took some pics this morning but, I can't find my USB camera cord.

Anyone using chemicals should most defentially have their license no doubt about it... I'd be reporting them immediatly! :hammerhead:

I agree commercially, L, but picture a chemist who needs to apply to his own property.

Alex: If you go to pollen.com you'll see that the area just south of Ontario (the map shows the US only) has a "medium" count at the moment, with examples of trees that are shedding, so that pretty well clinches it.

there are still some treatments available around for special situation also some "organic" stuff like fiesta still requires a license.

idk what people are doing around kw whether they are just thatching lawns or actually cutting them but there are definitely some fresh stripes around town.

Question: does anyone know a better source to get topsoil, mulch, sand or triple mix besides going with the big bag place (less mess Inc) that gets delivered wherever you want for $115.00?

JFGauvreau
04-06-2012, 08:28 PM
Ya man those things are expansive, in my area they are called the big yellow bags. Basically they will ship it out for free, 1 big bag of top soil (1 cubic yard) for 115$ ish. Now I get my own compost that I use for top dressing lawns, it contains 1.4 nitrogen, 1 phosphor and 1 potassium, 25$ a yard. It beats Scott's soil by far, they charge 6$ for a tiny bag that contains like .08 of nutrients.

Just try to find a local supplier of landscape materiel, I'm sure you will. But those yellow bags are garbage to be honest, full of weeds, not a lot of nutrients also.

I know a few places where you can get stuff but it is a bit costly. Someone told me about a place near me so I will try that place since they are family owned and they might have lower prices.

Man that's a lot for top soil. We sell it it for 35/yard minus the super sac(that's what there called here). I do do it in the sac as well but for 65.
