That is the question, Which would you rather do while mowing.

You can choose both if you want.

:D The last time I looked I was a man, and I would much rather sit on a z all day, as to bounce on a sulky all day behind the walkbehind . I used a walk behind for the first 4 1/2 years until I got the lazer, it has been a breeze ever since. I still use the wb on jobs that I can`t use the lazer, but most definitely prefer sitting.:D

If I could afford a nice 'Z' - I think I'd rather be on that. I believe I would just as soon stand behind the Toro as sit on the JD 345 !

You all have to admit..that was a pretty good one from Ol Stone.

Stand on a Wright Stander. Prefer it over my ZTR. Very comfortable, does hills, cuts close to edges, etc w/ less tire marks at turns. Only prefer Rider w/ PECO vac for leaf season. Oh yeah, the stander throws grass better too. I am definately going to switch to doubles next season for early spring and fall. Sounds like its the way to go.

rather stand and be a man. I am like turfdude, I would rather ride my super surfer. It does awesome on hills and faster on smaller yards than a z. standing also doesn't make you tired.

I'll take my rider any day. When your knees are shot from the constant beating from the sulkies, you will wish you had switched earlier.

Ok you caught me. I only use that sit down sulky for nice smooth sports fields. Ninety percent of the time I use a stand on sulky.

So in this case I must be a bisulkyual.

Ok since this has now turned into a sexist thread, which it is starting to show it now.

Any one want to put productivity numbers on the stand ups, or I guess your not stand up gentalmen.

Lawns under 10,000 SF, any difficulty range, hydro Stander over ZTR any day. 15,000 SF about even. Over 15,000 SF, depends on terrain!! Don't have #'s off top of my head, just demo one for a day & see what it can do.

Stand-ups are often done in public places, such as elevators, so the productivity would be higher.

This is getting way off topic and if it continues to stay off topic, I will move it to the off topic forum.

When it's 90 or above, I can't see how anyone wouldn't enjoy sitting down and doing as little as possible to preserve your energy for other manual tasks such as trimming.

As most of you know, I ride. :D

I agree with Eric, sitting is the way to go. Us lazy folks don't like to wear ourselves out standing around. Hehe.

I'd rather sit, BUT how often do you get up for that little piece of paper, stick, doggie chew toy, etc. The super surfers are kind of the best of both worlds (not a plug for GD). With w/b attention to detail is better, production is down.

MuskTurfKing
11-24-2001, 07:32 PM
That's why you look over everything to make sure you don't have any debris on the lawn. If it's a stick, I usually just mow over it. I'm pretty lazy when I'm sitting down.

On a stand up rider, W/B, or ZTR, you will still have to turn off the blades (set the brake),(put handles in nutral lock), or whatever to get off the mower.

This was started to see what Lawn Site members perfer, not for me to buy a piece of equipment.

I'll take my throne all day any day of the week.

Obviously the ZTR in open larger lawn are going to smoke those W/B's and stand-up's

I usually stand. That is, until I put on 10 lbs, then the velkie came off for a while and I walked. The sitting add-on that I fabricated is real nice-IF the lawn is flat with relatively few turns. The first time I hit a low spot with that thing, the t-bar nailed me in the gut. OUCH.

I have a friend who just bought a Z from another LMO in our area who is anxiously awaiting spring to see how his new machine works out.

My only comment to him was that I thought sitting was for desk jockies???

I wouldnt want to use a Z on a property less than 15m/sf personally. And it should be one that has minimal obstacles. I still prefer to walk - its what makes the joy of mowing what it is.

I like both, but I lean towards the ztr.Sometimes standing on the back on w/b isn't bad, and enjoyable. IF I had the $6,000-$9,000 sitting next to me I would buy a ztr.My full time job we run Lazers and a Super Z

my first seven years in this business, we didnt have a rider, or sulkys. after putting, and this is a guess, about 30,000 miles on my legs, i try not to mow at all anymore-LOL. we didnt buy ZTR's to save our legs, rather to increase productivity and profit. you guys really like those velkes and sulkys? ive only found them useful if it is a hydro mower(just my opinion though).

Stand. Unfortunately, sitting isn't a option since I work on the spine of the Blue Ridge Mtns. Some accts that I walk, I'm walking 5 feet below my walk-behind. Many accts I have to jump off the Velke in spots. One day I still had my golf shoes on from weedeating a steep bank. Tried to jump off Velke but golf cleats got stuck in holes on the platform. Can you say 'torn ligaments in knee?' Wasn't pretty.

Some of you guys need to mount the steerin' wheel on your truck on the bed and stand up to get from job to job.

I will either sit, stand or spin on my head....whatever gets the grass cut the fastest! Manly or not, I really dont care 'cause its all about the bottom line. And from what I have seen, sitting on a Z gets the jobs done way faster.

As for me....I'll sit, and be able to this work a lot longer. It's all about longevity and the money you make while doing it.

I don't have the option to do either yet. I'm still walking behind my W/b. I don't even have a sulky. But I can tell you from past exp working for another LCO I would rather sit anyday. You do plenty of standing trimming, edging, blowing and what ever other odds and ends you have to do in a days work. If I have the chance i'm sitting.

If the lawns were big enough to sit I would be. But I would rather a wb on this 1-4k sf lawns any day over a rider. It's just not practical in this area of the country. Takes u longer to unload a z then u could cut the yard in.

Or they haven't built up the business enough to justify it, or their route (hilly places) won't accomodate one, or maybe it's just not in the budget yet. Does that help clarify the issue for you or shall I spell it out again?
