I'm in New Haven, and the current situation or so called shortage has driven the pump price of diesel to around 2.00 per gallon. What is it costing around the country? I haven't had a chance to watch the news or read up on this, but hopefully it is a short term situation. (Fortunately I stocked up before the price went to outrageous!).

----------
Phil Grande - Soundview Landscape Supply - http://members.aol.com/slsnursery
Ivy League Landscaping - http://members.aol.com/scagrider

I paid $1.54 in the Chicago suburbs for diesel the other day when I filled up my JD. If the price of fuel goes up any more, I'm going to have to go buy me an Axe Mark Lazer Diesel, or haven't they came out with a diesel yet? :)
----------
Eric@ELM

Axe Mark?
Exmark is going to have a deisel out this summer. I understand they were consulting with Dickie Chopper and may be putting on 2 engines to keep up with the Choppers.
Does Dixie Chopper offer their 2 engine model with 1 deisel and 1 gas for those who can't decide?

I'm waiting for them to put twin 150 HP Jets on one. That will be neat.
----------
Eric@ELM
Hey Eric, have you ever seen the Chopper with the jet-turbine ? They had it at a trade show in Okeechobee Florida a few years ago. Talk about cool. By te way, hows the weather up there? It's 78 today in South Florida with a light breese off the ocean. Yesteryear L/S

Bobby, yes I have seen it. I took a picture of it while I was at the factory in November. The picture is on the equipment page on my website. They have 3 of them now. You asked about the weather, it is snowing very hard out, so will be plowing later tonight. $$ :)
BTW, Phil wants to know the prices of diesel fuel around the country. $1.54 west side of Chicago.
----------
Eric@ELM

It's not much of a problem for me Bobby.
I don't leave the house when the weather is
bad. I let my competiton plow all the
snow they can handle. This increases thier
costs and I can outbid them on the commercial
mowing jobs.
A smart northern contractor can make as much
money in 35 weeks than one who works 52 weeks
in the deep South.
As more and more contractors flee the rust belt for Florida it makes it makes less
competition up North.
Another fact is that when it is hot and dry
up north the grass grows very slowly and
I can enjoy much beach time.
In the south florida in the summer you have
to endure that sun, heat, and pea soup humidity for you need to mow that stuff you
call grass every five days.
The three month drought in the northeast last
summer put a real cramp on my cash flow for
I usually spend a few months sailing my boat
in Key largo.
A small motor home makes a great tow vehicle
for a commercial mowing crew. See a good
businessman can make EVERYTHING a tax write off.

Keith,
I don't remember the make or hp, but it was a liquid cooled unit they'll have later in 2000.
Lawrence you're too funny. Plowing is the most profitable of many businesses. Not because they don't make good money in the summer, but a properly set up snow business can make so much money that a $35.00 per man/hour lawn business is a nusience.

Lazer, I agree with you on that. I made as much in 6 hours plowing last night as I would in a week mowing lawns. :)
BTW Phil, diesel dropped to $1.51 when I filled up this morning when I got done plowing.
----------
Eric@ELM
Lazer,
Plowing is profitable in the lake effect regions. At my location we had our fist snowfall (3") just last week.
In my market the market is overrun with a bunch idiots that will plow on a per occurance basis.
If I went to any commerical account and
asked for 5 pushes up front the will laugh
at me in the face.
Let's see if you do snow removal you only have a small window to complete the task with
no control of when you will need to perform.
With commercial mowing maint. I can work 7 days a week 16 hours a day (my "big" mowers all have floodlights).
What's wrong with $35/man mowing? If am at
a job with two laborers mowing making $70
and my self applying pesticides at $100 that's $170 gross/hour.
Besides if I wanted to work or be on stand by
52 weeks a year I would get a real job.
I quite enjoy my 16 week annual vacation.
This gives me lots of time for "personal
enrichment". Right now a noreaster is hitting
my area dropping 8-12 inches. My truck is in
the garage and will stay there until Thrusday
when I have to do a puter format and re-install for my hairdresser.
While all the plowing contractors are out
running around like nutz tommorrow I will
be cataloging my MP3 collection.
What me worry?

Lazer,
Where do you get your information about this lazer diesel? I am just curious as I have not heard anything about this.
Here in SE Nebraska, Diesel is going for $1.35
That is outrageous. Especially since I can get Dyed diesel fuel for less than a buck a gallon, but the only thing I can legally run it in is my tractors.

Diesel Fuel is costing between $1.40-$1.45 per gallon in Charleston, SC. Two weeks ago, I had my tanks filled for $1.21 per gallon. What a difference two weeks makes. BTW, the truckers at the port of Charleston stagged a "rolling demonstration" protesting the price of fuel. Doubt it done much good.

farmall,
I was told about the Lazer Z deisel from a buddy of mine. He's in the know. He talks to Dane Scag perodically and knows a rep from Exmark. He always knows 6 months to a year whats coming next. He told me about the Great Dane Super Surfer last spring.
Probably not available until Spring 2001.

Cheap prices in the States. In Australia
we pay 72.9 cents per LITRE which would be
roughly 3 dollars a gallon. Over in New
Zealand they are paying $1.20 per litre.
Our hourly rates appear to be similar to
yours.I usually use about $1000 per month
in fuel.
