I am looking at a used Exmark. It has a 23hp Kohler. The selling is asking good price. I just hesitant due to the hours on it. It is a 60" and has 2200 hours.

How many hours do some of you have on your machine or how many would you expect. I don't want to buy something that will break next month but I also dont want to spend a lot.

Any problems that any of you have had around these hours that I should plan for? The mower is in good shape. Thanks.

Matt,

Some people on this site will say you will get 100 hrs. for every hp. Meaning a 23 hp will last you around 2300 hours! If the mower was well taken care care of and serviced regularly it should last longer! If I were you, I would try to find one with less hours. Check out craigslist.com, ebay, local paper and even this site. There are a lot of great deals out there on low hour mowers. You just need to be patient and shop around!

Matt,

I also wanted to mention that I have had mowers go up to 3500 and 4000 hrs. It really just depends on how they were treated and serviced. And some luck never hurt!

Thanks for your relpy. I figured 2500 with a bagger was a decent deal. I figure I may be able to sell it for the same if I'm not pleased for it.

I just did a service for a guy that has two Lazers, both 60 inch, one had just the regular stuff, belts and tires, 2000+ hours on the meter. The other one, 2500+ hours, had one bad spindle. Rebuilt spindle, kit for about 110 bucks plus my T & L. Other than that, the ones I've seen are rock solid, just keep it greased, this will save you alot of headaches.
Good Luck

that's a lot of hours. if price is right and it runs strong it could be fine; but it's like buying a car with 200,000 miles. it'll need stuff most likely. Another way to look at it is if it's lasted this long the owner may have taken good care of it; even better than someone selling a ragged-on one with only 1000 hours on it.

I recall reading that a Kohler Command is rated for 1000-1500 hrs. Anything above that is a bonus. I have a 23 hp. Kohler Command that has 2500+ hrs. on the meter. I have run synthetic Amsoil for 2300 of those 2500 hrs. It still runs decent but is getting a little tired. If the mower your looking at still has the original engine, I would consider the fact that it may need replaced in the near future. A replacement engine will cost $1500-$1800. You need to weigh this cost this into the price you give for this mower.

If it were me, I don't think I would buy it. I'd rather spend $2k on a used walk behind with less than 1,000 hrs on it. Maybe that's just me, but I just don't think it's worth it. I would shop around a bunch more before I'd buy this. This would be on the last of my list and I'd probably only buy it if I desperately needed a mower. Do you have any other options?

$2500? You can't beat that deal if the rest of the mower is in decent shape. You can even afford to get a new engine at that price. I agree, it depends on how it was serviced to how long it will last. I have a 99 too with 2600 hours and still running strong--knock on wood lol. But I always used Mobil 1 synthetic. You just don't know how the engine was treated but at the price.... I don't think I will ever buy a new mower. Just buy used and slap a new engine on it and keep on with the profit:usflag:

Thanks guys. I'm going to try to go pick it up tonight. Here are some pics. The guy said he takes good care of his mowers. He has about 8. Has a couple with around 4000 hours on them.
