Japanese Maples grow best in zones 5-8. They like well-drained, humusy, somewhat acid soils. They also like sustained moisture. If your site meets these specifications I would consider using them. Check with your local nursery to find out what type of success they have had with them in your area. They can be grown as a shrub or a small tree. Good Luck!
