When you re-edge an existing flowerbed do you just edge and let the dirt lay on top of the existing ground cover (ex: mulch or pinestraw) or do you take the extra time to rake back the old ground cover, edge, then cover up the dirt with old ground cover then re-mulch? I've always done the first one, but today a customer asked why not do it the second way, the only answer I could give was no need to as you can't tell the difference after new mulch is layed. After the job was done they agreed but it got me wondering.

We dont rake out the old edge, the dirt compacts down and the new mulch like you said covers it up anyway.

I agree, but would rake the old mulch back if it was a good paying customer and we weren't going to mulch it for several weeks.
