Product Spotlight: Irrigander™ 4/2 Pro Irrigation Expander with Irrigander™ 2-wire Technology
The Irrigander 4/2 Pro expander is a 4 zone irrigation expander designed to expand small to medium size systems that have enough outputs available on the irrigation controller to drive the additional zones. The Irrigander 4/2 Pro expander uses our new proprietary Irrigander 2-wire Technology. The Irrigander 2-wire Technology is specifically designed to bring the benefits of 2-wire technology to cost conscious small and medium size residential systems. The Irrigander 4/2 Pro expander using the Irrigander 2-wire Technology can drive 4 valves using just one dedicated field wire and the shared system common:

The Irrigander 4/2 Pro expander is comprised of two types of modules: an Encoder that is installed close to or inside the sprinkler controller; two 2-zone Decoders that are installed close to the valves to be controlled. The two Decoders can be located in two different locations for flexibility in the installation. The Encoder is the module with the green label in the pictures below:

Both the Encoder and the Decoder are designed for high reliability and are built using the highest quality commercial components to provide long, trouble-free operation. The Encoder printed circuit board is shown below with the different parts of the circuitry highlighted:

The Decoder and the Encoder use metal oxide varistor (MOV) surge suppression technology to minimize the potential damage from lightning and other electrical surges (see Encoder diagram above). This is the same surge protection technology found in surge protection power strips used to protect computers and other sensitive electronic devices. The Encoder and Decoder design provides very good protection from electrical surges but the installation of a ground rod at the Decoder location will enhance that protection. Optional Irrigander Surge Suppressors can be installed along the 2-wire path to further enhance protection from lightning.
The Decoder printed circuit board is encapsulated using an industrial electronic encapsulant material to protect the circuitry from the elements, especially water.
Installation of the Irrigander 4/2 Pro expander is simple. One dedicated field wire is attached to the Irrigander 4/2 Pro expander's output. The 4 inputs to the Encoder are connected to any available 4 irrigation controller outputs. The dedicated field wire and the system wide common wire are then connected to each Decoder and the outputs from the decoder are connected to the valves to be controlled.
The Irrigander 4/2 Pro expander Decoders can be installed in two configurations: “daisy-chain”; and “home run”. The “daisy-chain” configuration uses on field wire to connect each Decoder to the one before it:

The “home run” configuration runs each field wire back to the Encoder:

Each output from the Decoder can drive up to 2 valves per zone. The Irrigander 4/2 Pro expander requires 24 VAC which is supplied by the irrigation controller.
