A landscaper I know told me bobcat enterprises told him he could buy a loaded t300 for 48,500. That seems pretty cheap. Any other bobcat buyers and what did you pay?

It all depends on what your dealers rep wants to toss into the deal.
Does the term market share money mean anything to you?
You'd be surprised how low they can go.

All manufacturers do it to some extent whether its money they pay to subsidize the interest rates for the dealer- 0% for 42 months isn't cheap, or they set aside money for specific packages, etc. the only problem with it is that it comes at a price to the manufacturer in the form of lower operating margins. I still beleive that one of the primary reasons that IR sold Bobcat to the Koreans was because it was costing them too much to maintain marketshare with CAT starting to breath down their neck, CASE becoming more agressive, and JD introducing the 300 series (a big improvement over the 200 series). If you add all of that up with the crappy housing market and economy and the fact that Bobcat carried over 1000 new machines into 2007 that weren't sold to dealers you can see how the pinch happened. I still have many friends within the Bobcat organization and the margins kept getting smaller and smaller in order to stay on top of the market. Bam! Now the money/profits are going to a company that is half owned by the South Korean govt. Sad day for American made and owned.

36,000 how is that possible vicenut??? there going for 45,000 here..is your dealer hurting for bussiness?
I paid 35 and change last year for a T-190 w/ cab air and power bobtach plus I got 2.9%. I live in an area that has no dealer assigned territory. 2 dealers bidding against each other and toss in a few other brand to boot.

May be right. Since Dooson bought them out they have been selling them chaep around here. May be clearing out over stock? Maybe trying to recoup some of that big money they invested to show cash flow? Who knows.

They all mark there products up by 40% to 48%. A good friend of mine run a large skid steer dealer ship before he sold it due to Cancer. He said the rule for all skid steer Manf was to mark your product up 40 to 48% gross. He said he could go as low as 22% gross and still be fine That's nuts!!!!
I asked him why they didn't lower there mark up and sell more units. He said it would lower the used market so bad that noone could afford to trade in.

I'd like that kind of business! In todays market a dealer is making around 7-10% gross margins on skid steers. JDskidsteer could probably chime in on what a dealership is making too. I can tell you that if it was 22% gross margin dealers would be in hog heaven and the manufacturers wouldn't be subsidizing interest rates to 0%. The dealers would be on their own. It is tightrope out there for dealers and I can tell you that the part of the business they count on the most is the service department and not machine sales.

What about attachments and so on? You can't tell me that a dealer is not making 40% margin on attachments. Take the quick spade for example. When talking to my dealer about the product. He said when they first came out on the market. The product only had 30% margin on it because know one knew about it. But after a few months and having a hard time just keeping them in stock. The prices went up to 40%. Supply and demand makes a huge differece. Once skid steer sales drop. I bet we see a 15% decrease in price. That's a big dollare amount on $40,000

cpaum i think you are a little off....most attachments in a competive market do not make 20%....if you have a rental fleet, you may skin a few fat hogs on some rented machines in good shape, as far as machines, never had even smelled 40% on a skidsteer, there are too many others out there.....i guess if you were the only dealer for a particular style of machine in the 6 state area, you may have a shot, but i think you all would spend a day in the truck to pick up a ssl 2 states over to save 7-10k....sit down and really do the math on a ssl....when someone random calls me my phone quote is not even 20%

I am just going by what people have told me. I don't sell skid steers. I buy them for use. When I saw this tread I just called a few friends here in Minnesota and asked them. Maybe they are way off. This is all great imput. We all couldn't ask for a better site for stuff like this.
So am I paying to much for my Quick Spade attachments. I pay $168.00 per unit. I have yet to wear one out but I own two of them now. If I have to order one again. What should I be paying for them. Can you help me on that??

Iron Peddler I agree with you. Very competitive market. Even in the heyday skids were a tight market. the problem is that with 4-5 other skids usually in on a deal you better have a sharp pencil.
Cpaum I'm all for getting a machine at an affordable price but having been on the selling side I would want customers to know that if they punish their dealer too much the dealer that truly supports them is gonna be the one to take it in the shorts. You are correct that attachments were usually a bigger margin item but by good margin I mean maybe 20% at full margin. If a customer worked me to the bone on a machine I would try to sell the attachment(s) at a higher margin meaning I wouldn't budge as much. A good dealer wants to see his customer get a fair deal but he also has to ensure he can take care of his customers after the sale. An example would be allowing him the use of a loaner/reduced rental machine while a repair was being done on his machine. This holds true as well for a repair on a machine that isn't covered under warranty. Taking care of customers isn't free. If you squeezed me too tight on the deal you may have to pay reduced rate on a rental instead of getting a free loaner machine. In any case someone has got to pay for the use of the loaner machine while yours is being worked on. If I (the dealer) got a fair price for my machine it was easier for me to keep you running during what would normally be down time for you. I hope this clarifies things.

i don't know much about quick spade attachments, don't sell them here, must be a regional thing.......
digdeep, you explained it well.....may guys will push you down, and make you drop 4-6%, but i will say that most sales guys will not forget it...just like you all would not forget if a customer played you back and forth to save 10% with a competetive contractor. it is always about service after the sale, regardless of brand.

I guess having been on both sides of the fence (selling'em and now owning'em) put things in perspective for me. I'm all for trying to be fair with a guy but it used to burn me to have a guy try to whittle me to the bone at all costs damn any kind of relationship with me or the dealership. I was always sincere in trying to put a customer into the right machine at the right price so that he could be a profitable and productive as possible because I wanted to be known as someone that cared about my customer's business.
Unfortunately there was always someone that was only interested in the rock bottom price at the expense of anyone but themselves. Thankfully there were plenty of customers that knew both he and I had to make a living to eat.
