View Full Version : Need help from you guys....
*trucewhiteflag*
First off, I know nothing about Irrigation.
I have a commercial customer that I mow for and she has ask me to turn on their system. I know she had it blown out before winter, so what is the normal steps to get it back on? I have played around with the programmer last year just to change the time on my days there. So is there a valve to turn first or what?
I know its may seem like a stupid question to you all, but like I said, not my field.....Thanks for any info you can share.

I would also say get an irrigation guy to do this for you or go to school. There is a lot of good info on this site, but do you want to trust someone that might be a 12 year old kid?

I have never had the need for one. Although, I can see your point!
You got me thinking.......

Thanks for your honesty, we all started somewhere.
"Turning on the system" indicates she dumped the
previous contractor. Why? We could help with more
information. I guess my thought would be, do you
want to get into our world?
I'm not trying to get into your money, its just a simple turning on the system that I'm asking for guys.....as a favor to her.

That's not what I meant..we don't give a rat, in fact we welcome
new sprinkler geeks. A "favor" becomes your responsibility,
which translates to "learn the trade". It's not "simple".

True words here. Once you start with this one this year, you will have to keep it up and others you'll take on. Good money though consider learning the field and make it part of your "one stop shop," if you are going to be full landscape maintenance.

Hey guys, i'm a sprinkler guy, been in the business over 10 years. this spring, one of my customers asked me to mow her lawn. now i've never done this before, but how hard can it be? do y'all have any suggestions? i was thinking about starting at the curb and moving in but, as i've never mowed a lawn before, i'm really just pissing in the wind, i could use a little guidance. my mom gave me her old electric mower, that should be good right?
any help would be appreciated.

It's a good way to grow your business, as you have an established clientèle to start with. And you have asked the right guys, BUT it is too difficult to tell you how to do it over the internet. Each system is different, different on/off handles could be in the yard, basement, crawlspace. No idea if there is a mainline or manifold, what kind of controller, heads, etc..... Try to find a local contractor to do it, and watch as he does. Just act like a normal customer. Then get some education from supply houses, contractor friends, classes, maybe work with an irrigation contractor part time if possible. But whatever you do, don't listen to this guy GSXR1100
We also don't like giving away too much experience and knowledge for free. No offense towards you.

Turn water on, go through system, fix system, get paid lots of money.

Mike,
No, not at all, to be honest. She has some one who she calls to come out every year to flush the system for winter, but she had just simply ask me if I could turn it on, but did say she would call them back if I could not do it.
I just thought that if it were simple, I'd just do it for her. I have not even looked at it yet.
I thought that this was what this site was about.......HELPING ONE ANOTHER!
But as you can see, some people just can be the biggest smart azz, real easy hiding behind a computer screen.....
Like the guy making fun of the lawn mowing guy.....News flash for him, I'm not some kid with a push more, in fact, I do this because I love doing it and its only a part time thing for me, as I am a UNION ELECTRICIAN! Probably know ten times more than the smart azz does...... One more thing for the smart azz, I bet I can figure it out...

Sub it out to Mobile Irrigation, since they only charge eleven dollars.

Every post here yet has been to help the guy in an honest way. If we gave the same answer to all these questions, without knowing more about them, Dana's response would be right on, every time. Turn it on, insepct it, fix it, done.
If you cant take the humor and rampant talking out of turn, dont hang out.

Slow down tiger. if you really want advice, open the yellow pages and call a guy. if you want to do it yourself, open the valve, turn on the "programmer" and let her rip. theres not much more i can tell you.
as far as attitude, i think it's funny when you lawn boys think that irrigation is monkey's work. then you run into a problem, ask a vague question on the forum and get PO'ed when we break your chops.
while i'm sure in some parts of the country LCO's do the irrigation, here it's a separate business, and we pride ourselves on our licenses and experience. the lawn stripers that try to do this work usually call it quits within 2 years, and guys like me get to go rehab the crap they put in.
so excuse me for sounding a little jaded, next time i'll gladly walk you through how to do my job... for $125 a paragraph.

Install lots of orbit and lawn genie products. I would also suggest getting these glasses http://www.forestry-suppliers.com/product_pages/View_Catalog_Page.asp?mi=2058
And watch this for 10 minutes daily: http://www.badgerbadgerbadger.com/

OK then, I am in need of a exterior outlet for a customer that wants to move their controller from the garage to the outside. Circuit breakers are in the utility room in the middle of the home, and I want this on a dedicated circuit. Please give me detailed directions on how to do this. And I do not have any photos for you to guide me. I also want directions on how to fix the drywall when you have me rip into it, proper beauty rings, conduit, and pulling a permit.
