SourceOne recommends ALMAGARD 3752 but this stuff is super expensive. The big advantage to this grease is that it is super tacky and doesn't fling off the cams nearly as easily as cheaper more commonly available grease.

Any suggestions for a cheaper grease that is tacky and on the thick side?

Go to a local farm supply (AGRICULTURAL) store and ask what grease they have that is super sticky yet relatively inexpensive.

I just use the same lithium grease I use on my mowers. My plugr is 9 yrs old, and there is little wear on the cam and moving parts.
