Usually I just fire it up but I read that you should put a tablespoon or teaspoon of oil down the spark plug hole before turning it over. I guess that's for lubing the cylinder. True?

It depends on how long it's been sitting and where (inside/outside).....

Outside but under tarps, Manitoba Winter, 5 solid months in the coldest city on Earth with a population over 200k :( Yes, we're colder then Moscow.

I would add the oil to the cylinder then, Leave the plug out and rotate by hand a few times if possible before starting.

Yeah I think that's how I'll start everything up this year, it just makes sense. I wonder how much damage I caused in the past, I do seem to have engine troubles often.
Thanks, I guess when you say crank a few times you mean my pulling the cord eh? I'll do just do that, it must turn over something.

Yeah, In other words pull the rope/cord slowly so you don't blow the oil out of the spark plug hole before it gets worked into the ring grooves in the piston.
