View Full Version : Need some full shade choices please

I have a client that lives in a small lake house. Northern jersey zone 5b. Lot is full shade. She has 2 mountain pieris that are too big for the location. I have come up with a few things for her but she already has them or they are hard to find around here. Requirements are no more than 6 feet tall 3 feet wide full shade, flowering preferable but could also go with evergreen like yew. Ive had a long week and my brain is completely out of ideas.
As a general rule, broadleaf evergreens are good - like rhododendron, azalea, mountain laurel, cherry laurel, Euonymus, Holly, .... If it is really dense shade they will be somewhat more leggy and bloom less. Bigger leaves tend to be a evolved trait to get the most out of limited light in the case of evergreens.
Needle leaf evergreens tend to need full sun. If you notice, the needles tend to go all the way around the twigs and that combined with the branching in order to catch full sunlight from all directions.
