Was doing some wire troubleshooting work at one of our sites last week and opened up a valve box lid. To my surprise I was swarmed with bees that had started to build a hive in the box. Got stung twice before I could remove myself from the area.

One of our grounds workers is also a beekeeper so he came out and removed the bees so we could continue our work the next day. He got most of them and those left in the valve box were fumigated.

OUCH! :dizzy:

I had three or four boxes filled with hives last fall when I was doing blowouts. Grrrr. Thankfully it was cool enough that they were pretty dormant and I could just scoop out the hiving with a hand trowel and continue on my way.

We usually get wasps in our boxes. But never to that extent of mass hive that I've seen.

I had a few wires nibbled in one box, so I put in a sticky mousetrap, and what I caught was a few bumblebees.

I would be on the way to the emergency room after that one.

By the way, hello from MN. Finally back to work this week.

I love billable hours.

Hardest part was keeping the kids away from the area with riled up bees until they settled down and could be taken away. I had visions of some kid going into anaphylactic shock due to being allergic to bee stings. :dizzy:

i've had chipmunks, moles, mice, and the occasional snake. never bees, never that many. i'm not allergic but one of the techs are. just looking at that would have sent him running for his epi pen. (he's also the one that moisturizes all the time). i'm more accustomed to bees/wasps in outdoor timers.

i had two honey combs removed from some panels on a rent house of mine last summer. Took 5 full contractor bags to hold the hive. It was huge!!!

You know, I bet if you sprayed Fluid Film (http://www.eurekafluidfilm.com) in the box it would keep the bees and other pests away. If anyone is willing to try it, just pm me and I'll ship out a sample can. I'd just like to hear if it works.

Haven't used it for critters but we use it exclusively for loosening valve bolts, rusted galvanized pipe fittings and a myriad of other things. It has worked great and I love the fact that when we work on something that's been sprayed with Fluid Film it's not oily at all on our hands, cleans up easily and smells great. Started first use with the sample cans that were sent to me and now we buy the large cans through a local tractor company. Great product in my opinion.

Used to seeing a critter of some sort here and there. A few yrs ago while doing blowouts, one box had bee,s snake, and mice . Guess I hit the trifecta

Are you sure your moisturizing epi pen tech is in the right biz? I had one of those types as an assistant and he hated that I threw peanut shells on the floorboard and started cleaning the truck inside 2-3 times a day. Needless to say I canned him.

I got nailed 2 weeks ago by bees in a valve box. I heard the buzzing before I opened it but had a zone running & thought that it was a solenoid buzzing. Lesson learned.

Hey, somebody take me up on my offer. I really think it would work. I'll ship out a big can for a tester...:)

If it can loosen bolts, I wonder if some plastics might not be adversely affected by the stuff.

Not at all. Fluid Film will not harm paint, plastic or synthetic rubbers. No solvents.

No solvents? And it loosens bolts? Ahh, this modern age.

That is one of the things that make Fluid Film so unique. It loosens bolts because it never evaporates. That lanolin will continue to migrate down, never getting gummy or tacky. And bugs don't like it!

Not wanting to sidetrack the thread, but going to anyway... Is Fluid Film available in Canada? Read lots about it on this site, but I've never seen it anywhere to purchase around here....

Another intesresting thing about Fluid Film is that when sprayed on rusty areas it "bubbles up" and stays put instead of dripping away. Don't know what it has that does this... but it's fun to watch.

Our "bee guy" is coming into work at 5:30 in the morning to go after a HUGE hive in a tree at one of our elementary school sites. They initially wanted him to try and remove it this afternoon and his answer was, "I might be crazy for handling bees but I'm NOT stupid. I'll take the hive when it's cooler and earlier in the day."

Nice thing is he shares some of the honey he gets from all these "school spelling bees" with us at work. :clapping:
