My equipment...not much but gets the job done! The mower is a beast, the broom blows the grass away! And the iron rake i use for a nice crisp edge!

Well I started this thread... I found an old pic from last year. This was back when I had a partner. We had a little gig going... the black f-250/trailer were/are mine from before I decided to go full time in lawncare and partner with a good friend of mine.

I have actually down graded trucks as I didn't see the point in messing up my pretty new truck. I will post pics of current set-up sat. as promised.:usflag:

Funny you say that because there are quite a few LCO's around my area that haul 6.5x12 trailers with F-350 dump trucks. There is one company that ive seen pulling one with a monsterous Chevy 5500 landscape dump truck, bet they cant even see it when looking at the side mirrors LOL.

There are more than a few of those here too. Got big F-350-450's and little tiny trailers. It looks soo funny:laugh: One has an older GMC Top Kick 6500 and pulls a 6x12 trailer with it. Talk about rediculous!!!

here are a few pic not the best. this is 5 out of 6 trucks before race day. and my shop full of you know what. I do 90% of all repairs we run 13 guys. all truck have expanded sides plus all have gates on the back thatclose up. more debris = less dump trips. I notice a lot of you have no racks on you rigs. Lot of trips to dumps. Sooory they are not the best maybee some day I will pull it all out nicely.

Lots of toro two cycles + 4 cycles. shin and red max 630 and 7001 blower shin weed eater edgers sthil pole pruners grave mids and lot of other things I could be here all day writing but that is the main parts. I have a few exmark 21's they suck. It may be the same as toro but look closely at the main parts and see how they changed it and how much cheaper it is made. I remove all of my belt guides above the hub and install new belt guides so all My belt are easy to change without removing the hub for all of you toro guys out there. started on my own in 1993 did the full time collage thing to get my hort degree. in 1997 Hired my first employee. then 2 3 and so forth. Bought chevy trucks 1,2,3,4 not matching. Just what I could find. Then as I needed a new one I would trade them in for band new white fords stripped down, no carpet, no power any thing. We wash them weekly inside and out open the doors and hose and scrub them out, nice. I have aboat 175 accounts+ res and comm per week. I am licened in every feild so along with all those accounts comes all the extras irragation, lighting, installs etc. + all the fires to put out. On top of all that in the passed few years I'm getting more constrution jobs and am trying to open a full time crew or two who is dedicated. maint is set up no problem. still working on the other. I run 13 guys I'm 14 and maybee a few more. I do not have any office staff I am the manager. I have forman for each crew and a kinda main man to go to. when you get bigger the bumps get bigger as well. It is hard to let go some times yoiu just have to do. Lots of growing pains I like to take it nice and slow. I could be a lot bigger and I have had many opps. That means more trucks, equip, more people more headaces and more $$$$$ you have to spend. If I were to do it all over I would have had all the systems in place. If something does not work try something else. get dialed before you get big. Think aboat all the things that go with growing your company. And I mean every thing. Not just the things you see like trucks etc. Gas, oil, repairs, insurance, and the list goes on and on. Let me know if you have any more ? Ps my writing sucks

Mine is obviously not the nicest rig, however, I'll post some pictures of my equipment here ... these pictures are from the March, 2008 !! I sold the ExMark 36" WB.

Chattanooga, eh? I spent my high school years in Atlanta and would drive up there to visit a good friend - and we'd make pretty good money playing guitar and singing on the street!! Haha - good times.

And I miss the aquarium. Wish I wasn't so far away, now that I have 4 little boys...

What is it doing? I may be able to help you correct it. I love my Stihl equipment and will never change. Gotta get rid of my Echos soon. They are all junk after one year. I call Echo the throw away tool

The head and shaft spin at idle sometimes. It's not idling to high, it's idling really low but the shaft just starts spinning really fast. It's strange because the clutches on these are really good.

well everybody has super nice rigs in this thread, but the most efficient truck here from my viewpoint is that Isuzu cab over on the second page.

I also like the plain white work truck Chevy's and fords with a simple open trailer with a big sign on the truck and trailer.

I think I have one of the most efficient and better looking rigs out there (asside from the 4ft of wasted space on my trailer, my next one will be 3ft longer for 3 mowers). My trailer was $2360, my new 07 Dodge to pull it was $10995, my 52" Lightning was $7495 26lc kawa, my 60"lightning 31hp kawa was $8495, my handhelds were $2000. Trailer and handhelds paid for, and the Dodge is $215 month @ 5.9% 60months, the 52" is $147 month @ 6.9%, and the 60" is $222 month @ 5.49%. Total hard cost of $584 month this rig averages $13000 a month gross working 3 12 hour days with 3 men. I think making it a pretty efficient rig.

New Dodge truck for 11,000.00? Thats unheard of up here. Frig, you almost paid your 60" mower that amount.

Your saying you generate $13000 per month for approximately 450 man hours per month. After all your expenses, and replacement costs, and repairs, and depreciations, etc, etc, etc-Are you making any money? According to your numbers, your in the $28.00 per man hour range including equipment and operating costs. Seems a little low if you ask me. But this is just my opinion and observation, and I'm not trying to start something here, please dont get me wrong.

We do pretty good with the 3 day mowing on that rig, I know that rig pays for itself, and we pay for our son's doctor bills and medicine out of the profit generated. After labor, expenses, insurance etc we still make enough to pay $3800 month in medication, $400 month for The Vest, and around $2500 for doctor visit bills and our gas and food while going to the City for hospital visits. I have made that the sole purpose for that rig, seems like it always breaks out to solely take care of him by itself. I keep all the books seperate for that rig solely for that purpose. Not sure about the depreciation because I am kinda new to the lawncare biz, but I make sure to pay any extra to the equipment to get it payed off earlier. About the truck...lol I am a shopper and always watch the ads, Norman Dodge in Oklahoma runs the ST package dodge on sale for $10995 a few times a year, I have noticed that Randall Noe in Commerce TX is basically doing the same thing...they advertise $1000 cheaper than any competitor ad, and Sherman is running that truck for $11999 right now. Don't let them charge you the doc fees and extra add-ons at the closing table, write a check for $10999, and they have to take it...lol.

I also just bought a New 2008 Chevy 1500 V8 with tinted windows, emblems painted, custom billet grill, and tow package for $15500, don't let these car dealers rip you guys off! They offered me a V8 extended cab 2008 stripped for $17500. Never pay attention to the sticker price, they never mean anything!! I had to get a v8 cause the 6 on the dodge was kinda weak pulling my 18ft with 2 zero's on it. I sold my dodge to a buddy for $2000 down and $300 a month (waiting to get when taxes come in...lol)

One of the cheapest trucks around here is a ext cab 4x4 Ford Ranger, air/auto/windows for 20K. If I'm not mistaken, the most stripped down 2wd 1/2 ton is gonna run you 25-30, maybe I'm wrong.

We have another Big rig that is seperate that takes care of big contracts, a repair shop, a catering rig, and a mower dealership, so we have other income coming in. There will be more gross on the small rig when we acquire more mowing and contracts, but right now, just have a 3 day route built up, but its a long 3 days. I live here in the country, and alot of our yards are reaaaaally spread out. Sometimes its 25 to 30 miles between yards, so the full 11 to 12 hour days is not with the mowers running that long, alot of riding to the next stop...lol. The guys all work for $7.50 an hour, and it is costing about $10 an hour to run each mower (fuel & oil only). We try to bid yards @ around $120 an hour thus trying to make a minumum of $1200 a day with the 2 mowers. That is about the best I can do around here, you would be really shocked if you saw what I get on some of the bigger contracts I run the big 30ft trailer out of....I have to bid alot lower than what most of you would prolly consider doing your mom's yard for. We live in the poorest per household state in the US, thus bringing in the lowballers. In Hugo, Ok our average household income last year was $15000 a year!! A pretty nice brick house here either big and new or with 10 to 20 acres costs between $90000 and $150000! Its a whole different world down here, our average rent property is between $300 and $500 a month. You can buy as many acres as you want for around $1000 an acre!

What do you think that gets for mileage? Like for that truck are we talking gallons per mile instead of miles per gallon?

The reason it is so expensive is because the Canadian dollar is weak versus the American dollar. (even in our present world........ which says something) Look in the back of a more recent book and it will say something like $19.95 US, $26.95 CAN......... same thing with cars.

If you were to buy the truck here and haul it to Canada, he would pay you in Canadian dollars yes? Well when you went to cash that check for, say 30k, you would find out 30K Canadian is not the same as 30k American! It is all relative to area, a car company would have no way to sell a 11k car or truck where you are in Ontario JohnnyRoyale.

I just bought a 29000 USD machine from FLA and it cost me 29700 CDN with the exhange. The CDN dollar is strong now, almost at par, in comparison to 35% weaker from a few years past. Even after duty, taxes, shipping etc-theres no way that dodge for 30K will come close to the 60K their asking for it here. The only issue may be warranty, but i'm going to look into today.

No it shouldn't be enough to make 30k from 60k. But don't you already think some government agency has thought of this and put a tax/law on it? Come on, they are always ahead, don't you know that?

Sorry, it just pisses me off when I see someone having to pay more for something just cause they are in a different area, i.e. cars, mowers, trailers, etc. I have been enlighted to all here on lawnsite, and have helped a few people get cheaper trailers....lol. If people are a little more educated, they will save money and not feed the apparent pig in their local areas. This guy could by a plane ticket, fly down here to buy his truck, after customs and taxes, and still save almost $27000 on the same Dodge Dually I am driving! That is like a semi crappy rent house here.....he could use the money he saved and buy second house here to come to every once in a while....lol. The funny thing is, I can get him a new 3500 quad cab cummins dually, 2 26hp Kawasaki Liquid-Cooled Lightnings new, a trailer just like mine, 3 new top of the line redmax weedeaters, blowers, edger, hedge clipper, etc. around $50000 which is still $10000 less that he would just pay for the truck up there.

I degress, there is actually quite abit of money to be made mowing yards (if you have the equipment). I do both, and the landscaping and tree trimming jobs all come from my mowing. Both kinda accent each other. I can sit my fat butt on a mower all day and gross between $1 and $3 a minute!! Might be more profit in certain landscape jobs, but the mowing is easy and less stressful, and face it, monkeys could do it....lol. Get an airride seat and a 15mph machine and head for the country.... We did one landscape last year that paid alot, but after the 17 days we spent on the job, the expenses ate us alive. Not to mention the shingles I developed worried if they were going to like everything..... I would have rather sit on a mower and drinked lemonade all day!!!!! The only worry you have is running over their cat, or throwing a rock at your weedeater guy......

Something i observed as scrolling through all 16 pages, some people seem to invest a lot of money in customizing there landscape trailer, why not invest into an enclosed trailer instead? You get constant advertising when you letter it, it protects the equipment from rain and the elements, and you can hang stuff on the inside walls, and lock it up. I'd never paint or make my landscape trailer look really nice or weld racks to it because I am saving for an enclosed. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, my buddy and I wired them up. I have 5 toggles on under my dash, 1 for the cab lights, 1 for the amber cap lights, 1 for the red cap lights, 1 for the interior cap lights, and 1 for the accessory backup lights. Thanks:dancing:

Although I love to mow grass, there is no money in it. I'm a landscaper, not a lawn mower- thus the landscape rig.

I can net around $500/day solo....that wont make me a millionaire but it's definetly making money. I've grossed over $1000 in one day with another guy, probably net around $900 after paying my employee and all other overhead costs. Maybe you can make more money doing what you do, but if I can make a consistent $500-$700 a day to sit on my Lazer with my ipod then I'm not gonna stop doing that to plant trees.

Morningside
05-12-2008, 12:05 AM
the straps are pretty easy to work. they are attached at both ends and you just pull up to loosen and slide off to the outside.when you are done mowing drive back on the trailer and stop between the two wheel chocks and slide the strap over and push down. when i only carry the 32" walkbehind i move it to the strap side of the trailer and take the slack out of the strap and "BAM" you are secure. i got then at Northern Tool for about thirty bucks each.

how many yards do you have to cut to make this much?? I wish I could make money like that in a day. DANG!

It's very easy to make this much in one day... average lawn is around $40-$50 and I can knock out atleast 13 in one day. Most of my route is very tight which is good expecially with the gas prices climbing every day. The most profitable lawn that I have I get $125 for and the last time I cut it it took me an hour and 2 minutes by myself. Depending on what type of lawns you are mowing I think the most efficient setup for mid size residential lawns is either a 60'' TT and 60'' Lazer or just 2 60'' TT's .

Personally with the way my route is I would never use straps. I could see if the only accounts you do are very large condo's or very large commercial accounts when you only have to strap in a couple times at most a day but when you are loading up 15 times a day to drive a maximum of 5 minutes down the road I don't see it as being worth it plus the worst that is going to happen is your mower will bounce a couple inches to each side and thats only if you are hammering down a bumpy road or something.

But how many days a week are you keeping steady at grossing $500+ a day?? I bet that is only a couple days a week. Its different to do that for 5 days a week versus only 1-3. How old are you? Going by your screen name you could be pretty young.

my Isuzu.:)

Morton, great set-up. Why don't you get some graphics for the truck. Rolling advertisement. Did you buy the Isuzu new, are you happy with it? I think I may invest in one at the end of the year.
