View Full Version : ADVICE on buying USED walk-behind
12-07-2001, 03:38 PM
I am looking to buy a used walk-behind to repair over the winter. I'm pretty good with my hands and enjoy fixing stuff in the garage.
After they're back running good I'll either use em on my 1 acre lot or sell em come spring.
I've looked at SCAG, Bunton, Toro, and eXmark but haven't purchased anything yet.
Ya'll give me some feedback on what equipment you love/hate and why.

That's like opening a can of worms. Which ones do we like? ;) Exmark is my choice. You have somebody from each brand on this site.
If you planning on rebuilding then you better use a brand that you can easily get parts for. You need a shop close by that sells the brand you want.

my .02 worth is to stay away from Bunton. I have a used 52 hydro and the cut sucks. From what I've seen and heard Exmark first then toro.
Another thing to consider when making your purchase is how close is the nearest dealer for parts. I have a JD dealer and an Exmark dealer both within 3 miles of my house. The Biggest dealer in my area is over 20 miles from me. His prices are lower but drive and wait time for repairs and parts suck. He also caries wide assortment of brands but won't use them.
If the price is good buy it. These brands are all about the same
quality, but you want one cheap to use and most of these parts
are available aftermarket. You will get a lot of varying opinions,
but I would not turn down a good deal just because someone
here says one thing or another.

Thanks for the advice guys- especially the parts availability notes. I bought a used Scag and am in the process of rebuilding the deck. Everything else seems to be fine with a few adjustments or replacement parts. It had a lot of surface rust on the deck but I know a guy who has a body shop that he is letting me do some work in. I'll post a few pics when I pull them off the digital camera. Mower cost 450 with an extra tranny and I have about 230 into it already. I'll let you know the final $ damage.
