For all of those who get inspected. Where does the fire extinguisher need to be and does it need to be physically mounted to something?
Thanks.

I got nailed on K-7 about a month ago. Close to $1000 in fine unless I get everything in order.
I have to go Thursday to court.
I have not gotten my medical card yet and the extinguisher either. Everything else is in order.

Daym, that sucks!
Do you just have a normal truck/trailer setup?

Yeah, F-250 and single axle trailer rated at 2500 max load.
I talked to another DOT inspector and he thinks I just caught the guy on a bad day and he took his problems out on me.

Ahhhh, yeah, thats what I got!!!!!! Like you pose a problem compared to the end dumps running down the road, with no brakes, no tires, and every other violation you could think up!
Dude was a D-bag
You dont have any old Red Max trimmers laying around do you?
My pull start wont coil back on mine, cant get one till tuesday/wednesday

Your fire extinguisher does need to be mounted. Behind a seat, or somewhere accessible. I wouldn't put it anywhere it could get kicked around.
Hope you have a doc's appt scheduled for this week!

Your telling me a Fire Ext, and a medical card is required if you are under 16K gross? Where's the reg , I have never seen that in the DOT Handbook, BTW I have Class A license and a current medical card. Under 16 K is usually DOT exempt.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations- Subpart H, 393.95 Emergency Equipment (for the extinguisher stuff)
Same publication- 391.41 Subpart E Physical Qualifications and Examinations (for the medical card stuff)
This is for a commercial motor vehicle (a vehicle/'s used for business that has a GCWR or GVWR of 10001# or more)
Under 10,000k is exempt.

Yup, started picking on us here in Mn too. Even the local's are getting DOT training to enforce the laws. They tell us 1/2 ton trucks w/single axle trailers are over 10,000 combined weight. Gas cans are hazardous materials meaning you need to be 21 to carry. Does NOT include gas in equipment. I wonder if that is Fed law?

Certain parts of Colorado are getting pretty bad with DOT. I know a guy who got pulled over last fall and they nailed him with having spilt diesel in the bed of his truck. The DOT inspectors called in a HAZMAT team to clean it up. He's still in the court system trying to fight the fine. $$$$$$$

I got pulled over when I was still doing equipment. 10 warnings and two tickets!!! The prosecutor was a friend of mine from high school and let me off. But the DOT guys are cracking down hard. Get your stuff in order, guys, cause they now realize the revenue potential of weekend warriors. Because every nine to fiver who's off duty wants to earn extra jack, you legit guys are being penalized.

PerfectEarth is absolutely right. If you're over 10k, you're DOT bait.

That about sums it up. Also keep in mind the inspections on our type of vehicles are the easiest for Level 1 inspections since the brakes are not air and don't have to be measured. I'd strongly recommend staying under 10k GVWR (this includes truck and trailor). I spent a few years doing inspections for my dept and we used to nail box trucks and landscape trucks daily. But we usually didn't write citations for the violations and just submitted the inspections back to the Feds and told the drivers what to fix and what they needed.
Our Federal funding (grant money) expired and we only do the inspections now on a VERY limited basis.
If you guys are in the 10,001 or higher range you can request a DOT number application and get a cheat sheet for you to run down and make sure you have everything. After a couple NO violation inspections they will start leaving you alone. The whole idea (when the program was created) was to improve safety across the nation and reduce commercial vehicle accidents but over the years it has become another way to generate reveune.....which is unfortunate. Beat'em to the punch and get your vehicle in order. It will be cheaper in the long run and the ticket cops will soon (hopefully) learn to pass you over since you have it together.
