Three times all you material costs. Example 10 five gallon shrubs @ of 350.00 plus 1 bale of peat 15.00 and 1 yard of mulch at 30.00. The proposal should be 1185.00.

JMHO - this "rule of thumb" would only apply if the shrubs are bought wholesale.

One man and half a day's work, barring any unusual circumstances. Charge extra if you have to bring your own dolly :)

Read the posts on this site about people paying $15+ for 3 gals., going to HD/Lowe's for plant material, etc.

Occasionally I'll pop in to a retail center to buy a specialty item, and I'm amazed to see different contractors with carts loaded to the hilt with "bread and butter" plants.

Like the Isobel said; some people are just stupid.

i just want to clarify that I didn't mean to say the contractor in this case was stupid. they way I understood this thread was that the client had bought the shrubs retail, and not gone through the contractor.

so... some clients are just stupid.

sorry, firedoglawnman, i meant no offense to you.

But even if you are buying the plants at HD or L you should still charge three times. Today I went to my usual nursery and they had a weeping cherry for 175.00. I though it was a little too much so I stopped at another on the way back and found one for 140.00. I am going to charge 500 installed with a one year warranty. Sound fair? Some will think not but that is what the price should be.

Im sorry but HD/Lowes/Walmart are the worst places to buy plants/flowers/trees from, most the time they look 3/4 dead or unhealthy, if you want to replace something you buy from them, then go buy from there, otherwise find a nursery.

Like last fall when we had a frost that killed MANY trees/plants, I bought a Jap Maple, well I am not going to say what I got it for but you CAN GET DEALS and most the time when you buy from a nursery things are really wonderfull, at least where I buy from it is.:clapping:

If you bought a jap maple tree from the local nursery frost did not kill it. Unless your nursery has trees out of step with the weather; such as in a cold frame building, or something stupid like that - but even then it is doubtful.

Where did you hear that frost kills trees, after surviving a winter?
