View Full Version : Transmission problems - 32" Toro Proline

I have a 32" Toro walkbehind (I believe the model number is 30252). I think the transmission is going bad. I just started happening last week. When I push the t-bar it will go really slow. After about 10 seconds it will go to normal speed, as long as it's not a slight incline. Steeper hills, it won't move. Slight inclines, it goes very slow.

That said, I think it's the transmission.

Any suggestions on where to get a new tranny? Also, any help on how to install one?

sounds like the belts to me when did you replace them last? the reason i say this is because you said it picks up speed. if the gearbox is bad it wont go at all or start sliping out of gear. my advice would be to check the belts.

The only thing that makes me disagree is when i put the t-bar down (when going up a hill) is that shaft that comes out of the transmission that goes to each drive pulley doesn't move (normally is spins all of the time).

Does that sound more like transmission?

Sounds like you are talking about the trans axles not turning. The belt you should concern yourself with is under the engine deck turning the pulley on the trans input shaft. That is likely where your slippage is, causing the axles (to the wheel drive pulleys)to not turn. Tighten the idler on that belt.

Yes it is probably the belt is worn badly or cracked or just not enough tension on it. Some T-bar Toros have a pulley that has a nut going thru it that needs to be loosende and then the pulley moved to give the proper tension on the belt. On newer Toros there is a spring to keep tension on it the spring could be broken. Just some thoughts but id bet its something to do with the belt slipping not a bad transmission.
