Does anyone know what this pest is? I found a few of them in my lawn when I was digging them up. Any ideas? are they harmful? How would I get rid of them if they are?

It could be a cutworm pupa. But many other moth pupas look similar to that one so its kinda hard to tell. You may want to put it in a jar with lid and holes and wait for it to emerge to find out what it is for sure.

thanks. Its definatly a cutworm pupa. Is there anyway to kill these things? not much info on the web on these things. Im worried they are going to wreck my lawn

I'm at the house right now, but I'm sure that Merit is labeled for cutworms. Just curious, but did you find them on the West side of the property?

I found them in my backyard, which faces south. I found them when I was digging some holes for some plants. There are probably more, hopefully I can find an insecticide that will kill them like Sevin with carbaryl

Moths seem (To me, anyway) to take advantage of the late afternoon sun when laying their eggs. Not that that counts for anything. Just something I've noticed over the years.

do you have noticable damage?
if you really think they need to be treated
you may be better off using trichlorfon
merit would likely only surpress these at best
