I know this seems petty :hammerhead:but I am having an argument with one of my friends. How do you/what is the correct way to pronounce STIHL as in the power equiptment brand name, is it pronounced STEEL or STILL?

Thanks for your help.:waving:

Q. How do you pronounce the name STIHL?
A. Our name is pronounced exactly like the metal "steel."

It's German, hence it would be Shteehl (with a very SHORT sh sound, almost like steel, you could actually say s-teehl).
LOL I been sitting here saying it out loud to myself.

my logic is i pronounce words like theyre spelled ,
if they want people to say steel - spell it steel .

so i say still .

a suggestion to stihl from me , spell it STEEHL .
so its spelled how its said , plus different from steel .
ands close to the original spelling for customer familiarity .

But so many words are pronounced differently to how they are spelt! You must confuse people all the time ;):)

I had a guy tell me it was "style". Since i have taken some German, and have met numerous factory reps who all said steel, I tried to correct him, he laughed at me, shook his head and muttered "Some people..." after that, I let them say it however they wish...

I had the same problem grass! A customer asked me about my new "Still" hedge trimmer... I said "yep Steel hasn't given me any problems in the past." or something to that effect. He didn't take the hint. Anyway, no point in embarrassing him.
