View Full Version : Sod over stone/clay base?

Hi,
Two areas 30'X15', both sides of home, sloping away for drainage. Areas were thin layer of 1" to 2" stone over clay (Colorado). Can I just regrade and smooth stone into the clay soil, cover with fresh loam and then sod over it? Or do I need to remove the stone first?
Thx,
Gary

If the stone was getting tilled in to a depth of maybe 6" or more it would probably be ok but definitely at the bottom of the list of options. If you leave a layer of stone intact near the surface there will definitely be rooting problems as well as problems with moisture availability. Remove the stone.

I was hoping the loam would fill in the gaps in the stone but I understand your point that this would possibly create a moisture availability problem, particulary on a sloped area. I'll remove the stone!
Thanks,
Gary
