I was at the local yard today and nticed their compost is beautiful, nice dark and clean, their topsoil is good also, but I was wondering, do any of you use compost when seeding an area, or just topsoil?

I have used it to amend soil prior to seeding and sod installation. There is a large landscape firm here that uses a 1" layer of compost as a seedbed. It works really well as long as there are no torrential rains before roots get established.

I am new, but I have had good success spreading com[post before slice seeding on lawns that are in rough shape. I have also been trying a product called "Mainely Mulch", it is a local product that replaces straw, and it has nutrients and is bio-degradable.

I have a question though. Is it bad to use fert AND compost on an over seeded/slice seeded lawn?
