It's obvious that nothing grows underneath of these. After removing some over-sized ones that were to close to a customers house, what would be the best course of action to make the soil fertile again in preparation for new planting beds?
I searched but I didn't really find what I was looking for. Any hints would be great.

Many trees use a mechanism of poisoning the soil around the root zone to beat out the competitions. No big deal.
Clean up the area and dig in some compost to speed up the breakdown of any undesirable elements in the soil and buffer ph. Plenty of water at first is helpful.
