Then what is a weed wacker? A masturbating pothead? A $99 weedeater?

I think it's a regional thing. String trimmer is to weed wacker as coke is to pop.

Ya, weed wacker is more of a southern term. I know some people on here call it a weed whip or weedeater.

Most guys in the biz around here call it a trimmer....most people not in the biz call it a weedeater.....and we drink pop, not sodas....and we're "fixin' to" whenever we are about to do something.

I had a customer once write to me asking to explain what a "string trimmer" was.

Told them its the same as a "Weed Wacker". But Weed Wacker is a brand name and most professionals call them string trimmers or line trimmers.

Occasional employee of mine originally from Florida says "weed whip." Problem with "trimmer" is that's the hedge trimmer too.

He also once rigged my trimmer to use pretty heavy gauge metal wire instead of plastic line, which was crazy.

Look it up on the commercial equipment websites... trimmer.
Weed Wacker does not sound like something that I want to hear from someone that is about to cut my lawn.

Anybody who suggests my string trimmer is a weed wacker, I gently remind them that the item is used to trim turf, not weeds. If their lawn has so many weeds that I need something to wack down the weeds, then they have a turf management problem. A weed wacker implies it is used to cut down weeds. I don't want to leave my customers with the impression that their lawn is in that tough of condition.

For me, "string trimmer" all the way, keeping the Weedwacker as a brand name.

Weedwacker isn't a brand name, it's what Craftsman calls their trimmers. To customers, i'm trimming. But to me, it's a weed wacker.

One of my customers calls it a weed whip. One of my jobs I started last year, the customer asked me if I needed some scissors to trim around the bricks and fences. I asked her if she was kidding. I'm like "I have a trimmer" she was fascinated by it.

The reason the are called "weed" eater, wacker, whip or whatever is becaused when they were first introduced, they were ment to cut weeds in beds at ground level. Obviously not a good idea, as you are not getting the root, but people will buy anything.

Anyway, the way we use them today is a much better use of the technology.

I was gonna say...I think the poster who mentioned weed wacker as being a brand name - was thinking of "weed eater". lol. I CAN tell you guys this, though...and this is the honest truth. I was always told this, and I love this story.....One of my dad's best friends, Bob, was probably the first inventor of the string trimmer. While he didn't patent it, or market it, he invented one...way back in the 1950's. he used to own a dump, where everyone came to dump their stuff...including stores and stuff. They would always get croeds of people when these stores would dump their surpluses of items like shoes, clothes, and even food items, such as ice cream.
Anyway, he took an old sump pump motor, ran a piece of wire down the pipe, and would carry it to cut down grass and weeds around things. Now mind you, this was even before the Black & Decker scissor type trimmers that even had the deluxe long handle and wheel set. :)

I hate when people say Weed Wacker. Sounds so dumb. I use both string trimmer and weedeater. My dad always said weedeater so I grew up hearing that. Man; weed whip, that sounds like a drunk guy sitting at a trailer park.

My granddad calls it a "Spin Trim"

That's not really too bad of a name, it my opinion, but I prefer "Line Trimmer"
